Gmail Has a Daily Limit on Sending Email

gmail account disabled

Gmail imposes a limit on the attachment size (20 MB) and the overall storage space (6 GB and growing) but there’s also a daily quote on sending email.  Break the rules and Google will disable you Gmail account temporarily without any warnings.

So while sending an email message to a large group of friends using Gmail, read the following rules to avoid temporary shut-down of Gmail:

Rule 1. If you access Gmail via POP or IMAP clients (like Microsoft Outlook), you can send an email message to a maximum of 100 people at a time. Cross the limit and your account will be disabled for a day with the error "550 5.4.5 Daily sending quota exceeded."

Rule 2. If you access Gmail from the browser, you may not address an email message to more than 500 people at a time. Try adding any more recipients in the To, CC or BCC field and your Gmail account will get probably disabled for 24-72 hours. Error: "Gmail Lockdown in Secton 4"

Rule 3. Always double check email addresses of recipients before hitting the Send button in Gmail. That’s because your account will get disabled if the email message contains a large number of non-existent or broken addresses (<25 ?) that bounce back on failed delivery.

Rule 4: This is slightly unrelated but still important - Google will disable your Gmail account permanently if you don’t check your Gmail email for a period of nine months. All the stored messages will be deleted and you Gmail address (user name) may be released for others to grab it.

I could not even imagine that any such thing exists !
Strange!

#2 NCR 02.01.08

IMO the article is titled wrongly. I think these
rules are used just to stop spammers and not to restrict general users.

#3 mangla 02.01.08

after seeing rule no 3 and 4 I am sure Gmail is going the hotmail way.
Finally again Google is going evil. Thanks go hotmail and yahoo are still best in this busines. And our local rediff mail is bater than these policies.

Comment #1 and #2 must be from spammers, that’s the only thing that comes to mind. None of the first 3 rules should be any issue at all for anyone using Gmail for it’s intended purposes.

#4 makes total sense as well. If you don’t care enough to check your account in 9 months why should Google care to keep storing your messages? Yahoo and Hotmail will shut you off as well.

#5 SAMI 02.01.08

which source you got the info that, gmail can deleted all msg if any user didn’t check his/her g mail id with in nine month.?

please confirm …

thanks

#6 jsanderz 02.01.08

Thanks for the above tips, Gmail is ok for free but I still prefer Fastmail, sometimes you have to pay to get the best.

#7 Gaurav 02.01.08

referring to the last point, where in if you do not check gmail for 9 months altogether, does it apply to those instances where in I have set up an automatic email forward feature to one of the my primary main accounts , through which I maintain all my other gmail account emails ? so I do not personally log into check my other non-primary gmail accounts for months altogether… will you suggest to periodically check those email accounts as well to prevent those being locked out permanently by Goog??

#8 rishi 02.01.08

Rule #4 is the beginning of the end for Gmail.

@rishi

That is the dumbest thing ever written.

#11 essenzzo 02.01.08

I don’t find anything new in this article. Bcoz i came to know about this gmail policy 1 year ago whn I was marketing my blog.

I am looking for hacks like how to send email more than the limits :D

#12 veetrag 02.01.08

I like the final rule of releasing the id, others should learn from them.

#13 Michael 02.01.08

I now actively use my Gmail account to prevent suspension. One easy way, is to direct my subscription emails from web sites to my Gmail account…

#14 vinitneo 02.01.08

Rule no.1 & 2 will only apply for spammers. 500 mails a day!!! even Larry Page won’t be sending that much mail, so would you? Rule no. 3-Are you going to have more than 20 non-existent e-mail addresses? I don’t think so. Rule no.4- If you don’t read mail for 9 months, why use it at all ?

#15 Amazone Used Book Store 02.01.08

How about my mail all forword from gmail and never open it. Will they disable my account ???

3. Posts does not have any restriction in terms of size.

How about receiving limits and gmail paid edition ?

#20 Ken Hanscom 02.02.08

In some ways I am not surprised. These rules are actually both common sense and a good thing.

#21 adel 02.03.08

i also faced the same problem when
i developed C# applet to send mails using gmail smtp
they have limit of about 1500 mails
then they will send u these types of errors when you keep on sending

#22 Kevin 02.03.08

Not surprising !! Somehow Google has to put limit on usage, so they did this way. However “Break the rules and Google will disable you Gmail account temporarily without any warnings.” - Google should at least warn for the first time.

#23 Itinfo 02.03.08

Hello.
Does any one reading this post has seen such a problem ?

#24 Kevin 02.03.08

These rules exists for good reason. I think if you can’t figure out why then you should probably put a tin foil hat on your head to protect yourself from the ‘evil’ of google. Whatever floats your boat.

#25 Tru 02.03.08

not logging in for 9 months rule is not good… i left for a few yrs and didnt have net this was b4 gmail and my yahoo still worked i would hope the same for my gmail since thats the only one i use now

#26 Saim Baig 02.04.08

We are living in advanced times.I thought things were over long ago,but still there are such limitations. Thanks for pointing out a unique issue.

#27 www.itgalary.com 02.04.08

I have not noticed that on google.. But have seen that on yahoo..

#28 Dale Kaup 02.04.08

I didn’t use my gmail account for 729 days and it was still as I had left it, just with a lot of unanswered mail!

Dale

#29 Scott 02.04.08

dont get me started! it a joke! google is just losing…. and it looks bad

#30 Sudhanshu 02.24.08

Came across this issue while using Google Apps, it’s quite well detailed in the documentation there..

#31 HSBC Malaysia 02.26.08

Rule No. 4 is just normal same as others email service. But the question is how long the gmail will suspend the account? If the limit also is 9 months then is fine. Otherwise like Hotmail, after few months the account will be suspended.

#32 Daniel Mielke 03.19.08

I sent out a press release and found out the hard way about their limit. I use Wild Blue a satelite netword and they just changed to Gmail.
No warning about this rule and I am Paying close to a 100 dollars a month for the service. This really stinks. The shutdown has cost me dearly. I am running for Congress and my campaign has virtualy been put on hold for 24 hours. There needs to be laws in place on hanging people out to dry like this with no warnning. Surely when changes are made the customer should be informed.
I can see the need for some changes in this regards.

#33 Swati Kakade 04.17.08

Suppose,by mistake i sent 500 mails at a time from my gmail account and because of this my gmail id got disabled. So what i have to do so that i can regain my id and can operate it.
