Gmail Has a Daily Limit on Sending Email

gmail account disabled

Gmail imposes a limit on the attachment size (20 MB) and the overall storage space (6 GB and growing) but there’s also a daily quote on sending email.  Break the rules and Google will disable you Gmail account temporarily without any warnings.

So while sending an email message to a large group of friends using Gmail, read the following rules to avoid temporary shut-down of Gmail:

Rule 1. If you access Gmail via POP or IMAP clients (like Microsoft Outlook), you can send an email message to a maximum of 100 people at a time. Cross the limit and your account will be disabled for a day with the error "550 5.4.5 Daily sending quota exceeded."

Rule 2. If you access Gmail from the browser, you may not address an email message to more than 500 people at a time. Try adding any more recipients in the To, CC or BCC field and your Gmail account will get probably disabled for 24-72 hours. Error: "Gmail Lockdown in Secton 4"

Rule 3. Always double check email addresses of recipients before hitting the Send button in Gmail. That’s because your account will get disabled if the email message contains a large number of non-existent or broken addresses (<25 ?) that bounce back on failed delivery.

Rule 4: This is slightly unrelated but still important - Google will disable your Gmail account permanently if you don’t check your Gmail email for a period of nine months. All the stored messages will be deleted and you Gmail address (user name) may be released for others to grab it.

I could not even imagine that any such thing exists !
Strange!

IMO the article is titled wrongly. I think these
rules are used just to stop spammers and not to restrict general users.

after seeing rule no 3 and 4 I am sure Gmail is going the hotmail way.
Finally again Google is going evil. Thanks go hotmail and yahoo are still best in this busines. And our local rediff mail is bater than these policies.

Comment #1 and #2 must be from spammers, that’s the only thing that comes to mind. None of the first 3 rules should be any issue at all for anyone using Gmail for it’s intended purposes.

#4 makes total sense as well. If you don’t care enough to check your account in 9 months why should Google care to keep storing your messages? Yahoo and Hotmail will shut you off as well.

which source you got the info that, gmail can deleted all msg if any user didn’t check his/her g mail id with in nine month.?

please confirm …

thanks

Thanks for the above tips, Gmail is ok for free but I still prefer Fastmail, sometimes you have to pay to get the best.

referring to the last point, where in if you do not check gmail for 9 months altogether, does it apply to those instances where in I have set up an automatic email forward feature to one of the my primary main accounts , through which I maintain all my other gmail account emails ? so I do not personally log into check my other non-primary gmail accounts for months altogether… will you suggest to periodically check those email accounts as well to prevent those being locked out permanently by Goog??

Rule #4 is the beginning of the end for Gmail.

Nothing is infinite

@rishi

That is the dumbest thing ever written.

I don’t find anything new in this article. Bcoz i came to know about this gmail policy 1 year ago whn I was marketing my blog.

I am looking for hacks like how to send email more than the limits :D

I like the final rule of releasing the id, others should learn from them.

I now actively use my Gmail account to prevent suspension. One easy way, is to direct my subscription emails from web sites to my Gmail account…

Rule no.1 & 2 will only apply for spammers. 500 mails a day!!! even Larry Page won’t be sending that much mail, so would you? Rule no. 3-Are you going to have more than 20 non-existent e-mail addresses? I don’t think so. Rule no.4- If you don’t read mail for 9 months, why use it at all ?

How about my mail all forword from gmail and never open it. Will they disable my account ???

Is there any daily limit of blog uploads at Blogger?

Gmail is not truely Unlimited hehe :D

Hi Julian,
Here are some restrictions which I know about blogger posting.
1. 500 character limit for Blog Description
2. Through 250K per picture limit for Blogger Mobile.
3. Posts does not have any restriction in terms of size.
4. No limits for number of comments.
5. No limits for number posts

Thanks,
Dutt

How about receiving limits and gmail paid edition ?

In some ways I am not surprised. These rules are actually both common sense and a good thing.

i also faced the same problem when
i developed C# applet to send mails using gmail smtp
they have limit of about 1500 mails
then they will send u these types of errors when you keep on sending

Not surprising !! Somehow Google has to put limit on usage, so they did this way. However “Break the rules and Google will disable you Gmail account temporarily without any warnings.” - Google should at least warn for the first time.

Hello.
Does any one reading this post has seen such a problem ?

These rules exists for good reason. I think if you can’t figure out why then you should probably put a tin foil hat on your head to protect yourself from the ‘evil’ of google. Whatever floats your boat.

not logging in for 9 months rule is not good… i left for a few yrs and didnt have net this was b4 gmail and my yahoo still worked i would hope the same for my gmail since thats the only one i use now

We are living in advanced times.I thought things were over long ago,but still there are such limitations. Thanks for pointing out a unique issue.

I have not noticed that on google.. But have seen that on yahoo..

I didn’t use my gmail account for 729 days and it was still as I had left it, just with a lot of unanswered mail!

Dale

dont get me started! it a joke! google is just losing…. and it looks bad

Came across this issue while using Google Apps, it’s quite well detailed in the documentation there..

Rule No. 4 is just normal same as others email service. But the question is how long the gmail will suspend the account? If the limit also is 9 months then is fine. Otherwise like Hotmail, after few months the account will be suspended.

I sent out a press release and found out the hard way about their limit. I use Wild Blue a satelite netword and they just changed to Gmail.
No warning about this rule and I am Paying close to a 100 dollars a month for the service. This really stinks. The shutdown has cost me dearly. I am running for Congress and my campaign has virtualy been put on hold for 24 hours. There needs to be laws in place on hanging people out to dry like this with no warnning. Surely when changes are made the customer should be informed.
I can see the need for some changes in this regards.

Suppose,by mistake i sent 500 mails at a time from my gmail account and because of this my gmail id got disabled. So what i have to do so that i can regain my id and can operate it.

Gmail used to be my favourite, not any more. Google meant “no limits” on my mind, precisely the mistake of hotmail and yahoo was to limit users, but now Google is joing the very basic email service not expectional any more. I am not a person that uses gmail to botter others, I am a volunteer activist living with HIV trying to stop this epidemic telling my story and demanding responses from governments to the AIDS epidemic. What will I do now? go back to hotmail and yahoo and those will become again my main email addresses. In spanish we have a say: Mas vale lo viejo conocido que lo nuevo por conocer (It is better the old that is known that the new to know). Truth for Google. Goodbye google, not my favorite any more. This is unfair treatment use to users. When did we loose Gmail?

@#32 Daniel Mielke 03.19.08

You are using your Gmail address for business, is that correct? Just a question… when it’s that important, why don’t you pay 30 bucks a YEAR for a domain with mail accounts and web hosting? Thousands of companies offer that. IMAP, POP3, all included. And most of them offer a list server.

@#34 Gracia Violeta Ross 05.21.08

HoTMaiL NEVER limited users. What exactly did Hotmail do? I always was able to send and receive mails.

Serious, NO NORMAL person is sending out more than 50 mails at a time. In the early 90s there was a product.. called list server… people signed up and received updates from the list owner. AKA mailing list. Every press agency is using that, every serious company is using that. Advantage: Customers can unsubscribe 24/7.

Gmail is a BETA product. You guys ever thought about that Google could shut down the beta in 10 minutes? When there is massive abuse, Google sure WILL disable this service. The first providers are already blocking @gmail.com addresses.

Google Mail is a BETA product and is for individuals. No serious company is using Google as their data storage… it’s like you write your SSN on your weblog…

I created a new gmail account. After I using POP access my email was rejected by Gmail, with the following error against it: “550 5.4.5 Daily sending quota exceeded”. So, What’s happen?

Actually normal people do send out more then 50 emails a day… normal people with a large group of people to contact. People like me who run a nonprofit on total volunteer effort with no cash donations accepted. Thanks to the press we’ve received (semi national even) we have a mailing list of close to 600 people. While gmail wouldn’t let me send to more then 500 people when I broke the list in two and sent it let me just fine…. just that the next email wouldn’t send. We aren’t a spammer as everyone on the email list signed up and can easily get off the list. It’s just we’ve got a number of people who are interested. Really Google… hmm… I’m on the radio tomorrow… maybe I’ll bring this up?

i sent > 500 mails at a time from my gmail account and because of this my gmail id got disabled. So what i have to do so that i can regain my id and can operate it.

Hotmail unlimited? Uh, no. I just paid for the Hotmail Plus service, and got blocked after sending out e-mails to let my friends, family, and business associates know that my e-mail address changed.

It makes everyone I know think I’m an idiot, especially since I PAID for it. Good grief.

good overview.

clear. concise.

could someone please put digital inspiration in charge of global IT?

two thumbs way up,

jason

if one puts one email id in the ‘to’ feild and adds 50 ids in the ‘bcc’ feild; and sends 10 such emails - how will google count it? as 10 mails or as 500 mails?

What I would like to change is the opening of my gmail account! When I enter link , my account is display immediately without ever entering the name of the account or the account password. How do I change this process?

I also try to change my password and it wouldn’t change, what can I do. I went into setting and change but nothing happened. Please help! thank you

How long before google restores your ability to send email if you screwed up and sent messages to too many people? Day, week, month?

Rule 1. If you access Gmail via POP or IMAP clients (like Microsoft Outlook), you can send an email message to a maximum of 100 people at a time. Cross the limit and your account will be disabled for a day with the error “550 5.4.5 Daily sending quota exceeded.”

I am non-profit activist who send mails to people who voluntarily ask for it.
If i send mails of 100 each 10-15 times in a single day through outlook, will the account stay unblocked?

I am a social worker who send mails to people who requires it.If i send mails of 100 each 10-15 times in a single day through outlook, will the account stay unblocked?

didn’t know the limit of people you could send one message to was different if using POP or the browser options. Thanks for the info!

Man, you people are *thick*.

I especially loved the idiot that spoke of ‘advanced times’ and not needing limitations.

If google took all the limitations off the gmail accounts you’d suddenly find a *huge* increase in spam. No longer would people need botnets to spam. Just get a gmail account, job done. Smart..

What would happen then? Idiots would moan and call people evil.

STOP MOANING. There are people out there dying of diseases that can be prevented for the price of a coffee at starbucks you selfish idiots.
