I recently ordered the Adobe CS3 Master Collection through a friend and he just told me that I will have to pay additional 9% customs duty for importing software in India.
Oops! I thought computer software import in India is exempt from duties and taxes. At least demonstration and NFR software are not subject to taxes at the airport.

Hi Amit
The Import duty for the software in India is ZERO incase you do it for personal use . YOu have to send it to the concerned custom officer and if they are satisfied there would be no duty .
Additionally the duty of Import of software is 10% +2% which is only again on packaged software for reselling purpose only . Downloaded software has no duty ( Why do we need for CDs that much duty , Download it simple !)
The only thing is if you are selling a software , how would you convince a Bank that you have imported the license of the software ( All Software is same ) only we need to have the License file ( code) for the same ? Do you have any idea of this .
All the best for Blogging conference ! Just came today to Agra ..
Thanks
Rohit
