SyncToy is a free, and awesome, utility from Microsoft that lets you keep folders in sync with each other. If you have two or more computers connected over a home network (share), you can use SyncToy to automatically copy files from one computer to another and thus make a local (onsite) backup.
SyncToy is very useful for Dropbox users as well as you can backup files outside the Dropbox folder. Setup a folder pair where one folder is a sub-folder inside Dropbox while the other folder is the one that you want to backup.
Fixing SyncToy Errors
If you have used SyncToy for some time, you may have noticed that it does sometime throw up some strange errors especially when you are trying to run a preview the changes made to a folder pair.
The most common SyncToy error reads something like this.
Failed to create folder pair. Failed to create the provider.
The Microsoft forums offer a tons of solutions to fix this problem – like uninstalling and re-installing SyncToy, repairing the SQL server database, etc. – but none of them worked in my case.
The fix is however simpler. Go to Add / Remove programs under Control panel and look for the entry that says Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 Provider Services. Select the entry and click Repair. Now restart SyncToy and it should work just fine.
