How do you share a bunch of websites with grandma? Normally, you would put all the links in an email message and send it across.
This is fine but imagine if your list of websites is long – that would require her to make way too many clicks and she will also end up opening several browser windows on the desktop.
Like other web clipping tools, Google Reader now lets you save content from regular web pages. Earlier the sharing feature in Google Reader was limited only to sites that syndicated content via RSS feeds.
You have already seen a video demo of Iterasi but now it’s time to experience the product.
Iterasi is a browser extension for Firefox and IE that lets you save exact copies of web pages at the click of a button. Iterasi also preserves the images, hyperlinks and CSS formatting along with the web content.
While you easily add website links to Google Bookmarks using the Google Toolbar in IE or Firefox, an option definitely worth considering is Yawas.
Yawas (short for Yet Another Web Annotation System) is a brand new Firefox extension that offers something extra which you may not see in existing social bookmarking add-ons.
Clip To OneNote is a free Firefox add-on that lets you send complete web pages or clip snippets from Firefox to OneNote with a simple right click (see screenshot).
Though the Clip To OneNote extension was written for Microsoft OneNote 2003 and Firefox 1.5, it still works perfect with the newer versions of Firefox (2, 3) and OneNote 2007 but installation is a bit tricky.
Here’s how to install the Clip To OneNote extension in Firefox 3:
1. Type about:config in your Firefox Address bar and click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button.
2. Right-click and select New -> Boolean. Give a name extensions.checkCompatibility and set the value as false.
3. Create another new boolean pair with the name as extensions.checkUpdateSecurity and value as false.
4. Restart Firefox and install clipnote.xpi - if Firefox shows a working, click Allow Access.
5. Go Tools -> Add-ons and open the Option dialog for Clip to OneNote. Browse for the folder that contains your OneNote.exe file. Click OK and you are done.
Though the above workaround makes OneNote compatible with Firefox 3, it’s time that Microsoft OneNote team releases an official add-on considering that we have so many good Web Clipping Tools in the market especially Evernote that even provides a Web Clipper for Firefox. Thanks Patrick and Gina.
ShifD, a new note taking application, is a wonderful mix of Instapaper and Clipmarks. Developed by the New York Times, this simple yet very useful app is available for the desktop, web browser and even your mobile phone.
You could either select some text on a web page and its instantly saved as a new note to your online account (like Clipmarks) or you can just save the link (URL) of the current page pretty much like the "read later" feature of Instapaper.
Windows Vista comes with a handy Sticky Notes gadget that you can place anywhere on the desktop and quickly jot down notes, shopping lists, etc. Similarly, there’s a Scratch Pad gadget in Google Desktop for capturing text notes without opening external applications like Outlook or Notepad.
Both are fairly decent solutions but if you are looking for more powerful digital post-in notes for your computer screen, consider Hott Notes - they are again free and closely mimic the real 3M Post-It Notes discussed earlier.
Coinciding with the launch of Firefox 3 Beta 3, Google today quietly released a new update for their Google Notebook add-on to make their note taking software compatible with the new Firefox release.
There’s a small but useful enhancement - you can select any text snippet on a web page and a "Note This" button appears so you can save that information in Google Notebook right away. This is somewhat similar to the Note This feature on Google.com.
With billions of web pages around, keeping track of information that you discover on the web is extremely tough. Some of us rely on bookmarks but they are unmanageable and become useless over time when the underlying pages disappear because the website structure may have changed.
If your bookmark folder is also getting obese, switch to any of these web clipping tools - they help you capture and save anything from the Internet including text notes, images, complete web pages, documents, PDFs, etc.
So even if the source website is gone, you will never feel lost again.
