This will be of interest to Dragon NaturallySpeaking users who also have an iPhone or iPad.
Speech recognition software, like Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking, let you use a computer with simple voice commands. You can dictate Word documents, reply to emails, launch applications or even browse the web by simply speaking to the computer – no need to touch the keyboard or your mouse.
In the regular workflow, you first connect the microphone to your computer, then put on the headset and start speaking. Nuance is attempting to replace that wired mic with your iOS device itself.
The company, whose name is almost synonymous with speech recognition software, today released a universal iOS app called Dragon Remote that converts your iPhone (or iPad or iPod Touch) into a wireless microphone for Dragon Naturally Speaking. See a demo:
The app makes a connection to your Windows computer over Wi-Fi and, once connected, you may dictate directly into the iPhone instead of using a microphone. Both the computer and the iPhone must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
The Dragon Remote Microphone app is a free download but for it to work, you need to have Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 (Premium, Professional, or Legal) installed on the PC.
It is currently compatible with the Windows version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking but a Mac could be coming according to a tweet from @Nuance – "..our goal is to provide PC & Mac users w/same great experience. Stay tuned!"
Nuance also offers stand-alone dictation apps for the iPhone and iPad that are completely free and let you dictate emails, text messages and more.
