Google today released an updated version of Google Desktop Search that includes no new features but significantly improves performance as per Jói Sigurðsson.
- Google Desktop Search 5.8 cuts down memory usage during startup by about 50%.
- Google Desktop is more stable than ever with Microsoft Outlook.
- Shutdown now happens five times faster.
I am very satisfied with Windows Vista’s built-in search program and therefore don’t see a reason for switching over to Google Desktop. Thoughts?

I use it extensively. Google Desktop Search is a GODSEND for the absolute car wreck that Outlooks built in search is. I have never used such a poor excuse for search as what outlook tried to provide.
Honestly, for an enterprise grade software, the search in outlook feels like it has been written by a 15 year old Basic programmer. Argggg! >.<

Vista’s integrated search is perfect. Why would I put myself through this?

Yes, Vista search is fast and built-in. There is no reason to use GDS. Most of Google stuff has too much spying functionality. And people who are not careful can get entire index of their files exported to Google!

Google Desktop is faster than Windows Vista search (even before this upgrade). The results looks more relevant and smart and it doesn’t lock the HD when doing the search.
The only faster desktop search I ever saw is Spotlight in Mac, but it’s another story =)

Yes, Vista search is better than Google Desktop. It also uses quite a bit of memory even though the new version uses less memory than before.

Obviously Windows Vista built-in search is highly effective, but what about those millions of PCs with XP. In that case the new Google Desktop is good option. No wonder Google is still holding on improving Desktop.

I prefer Windows over Google. But I think Copernic has a better desktop search than both of them.

I dont like vista so dont know about its functionality. GD is slow but if it gets faster i will like it more.

I use GDS because Vista’s search can’t index web history and cache. GDS does. My biggest issue with GDS is that there’s no plug-in for Microsoft OneNote, which I use. Does anyone know of such a plug-in?

Well, for that Windows Desktop Search 5 is there. It is good for what you want search. Google desktop, of late, has so much junk like the side bar and other things that cannot be turned off completely.
