Microsoft Wants Your Opinion on Google Chrome OS

google chrome os As you know already, Google will launch a new computer operating system sometime in the second half of 2010. The Google Chrome OS will be Linux-based and, like all other Google products, consumers will be able to download and install the OS for free on their PCs that have either x86 or ARM processors (commonly found in netbooks).

All that we know about Google Chrome OS today is based on a couple of blog posts that were published on the official Google blog and therefore it’s fairly early to predict if the Chrome operating system will make any impact on the market-share of Windows.

I was recently filling a survey commissioned by Microsoft for the Windows 7 launch party and it had a very interesting question – "How favorable or unfavorable your impression is of the following OS brands." The choices were Windows, Mac, Linux and Google Chrome.

Not sure if anyone outside the Googleplex has seen a working demo of Chrome OS and the final launch is several months away but Microsoft already looks pretty curious to know the public perception of the Google product based on all the initial buzz. Here’s a screenshot from the survey.

This could have something to do with Microsofts Gazelle R&D project ( link .

It was announced before Google Chrome OS and basically does the same thing.

I worked for Oracle and 13 years ago we made the Network Computer (NC) with similar features as the Google Chrome OS. Unfortunately it didn’t work out because of the speed and price. I strongly support this idea! Best wishes to Google!

But why is yr response to Linux as “Mostly Unfavourable”?????

Oops…forgot to say great post! Looking forward to your next one.

i strongly feel that more the OS user friendly there is more posiblity of people liking it , MS is user friendly and that may be the reason for its success .. also not many user are tech savvy to use complex OS , so if google OS happens to be more user friendly the more are its chances to grow, and the next big thing is that it is FREE!! ..
people want more sortout life not complex ..
as crome will be only for netbook i guess this will bring up the next technology revolution .
I would VOte for “Mostly Favourable” for crome …

@rishi:
Windows operating systems are not _particularly_ user friendly; they’re average. However users are used to Windows, and that’s it.

I know that Windows is going to lose at least 3 customers when Chrome OS comes out. Windows still has several problems. I’ve used the Google Chrome Browser and it is the fastest and least glitchy browser around. So, I know that the OS will be amazing. I support Google all the way with Chrome OS. I can’t wait to see the beta. Google said it should be out later this year. Some people are guessing it will be when Windows 7 goes public. Plus, Google Chrome OS will never cost you money! Meaning, Acer, HP, Asus, and all other companies that are partnered with Google to make the netbooks will be willing to sell them cheaper than if it had Windows 7. Windows 7 is set to cost $200-$600 depending on the version you get. And Mac, which just sucks is higher yet especially if you get a computer designed to run it. So, will it kill Windows? Possibly, I know I’m switching, my brother’s switch, and my best friend is switching.

Here’s how I would’ve filled out the survey:

Windows: 3
Mac: 1
Linux: 2
Google Chrome OS: 5

I think that microsoft will still be in business for the better part of 5 years and still have most of the market for 5 years. After that I think that Google will have fixed there OS enough to attract alot more customers. Many software out there are made for windows and so I don’t think that customers would easily change OS. I dont like apple that much and linux is cool but still even more buggier than windows in my opinion. (Im talking about Ubuntu). But its free so what the hell. I like linux better then apple and (its overpriced anyway). Im just letting microsoft know that im still going to be a microsoft customer even after chrome OS comes out. Obiously im still going to be using all four OS’s but more windows than any of the others.

Interesting! Nice to see that Microsoft is beginning to take its rivals seriously… especially after their slip up with ‘mis’managing IE6 and leaving the gates wide open for Firefox!
Question: So does anyone know what’s the status of the Windows 7 Launch Party in India? Have the invites gone out and hosts finalized? I know hosts in the USA have got their confirmations and that the House Party site had problems handling ‘volumes’? Any updates on India?

I’m interested in the Chrome OS just for my Dell D600’s I have laying around. If it’s quick, launches a chrome browser, and connects to WiFi easily, I’m sold. No point in buying an OS for each just to do some web surfing. I could easily see MS getting a little worried about it. I just hope it’s better than Intel’s Moblin, which is horrific so far.
