SnagIt Screenshot Challenge - Win Free Full Licenses of SnagIt 9

When taking a screenshot with SnagIt you cannot capture the mouse icon on the screen. If you are trying to create an instructional document, and you are highlighting a menu item to show which item to select, the mouse pointer does not show up. You need to manually insert an arrow or other indicator to clearly illustrate what item you are selecting on the windows menu. This really makes things look silly when a tooltip is being displayed as well. The tooltip is just floating out in space because the mouse pointer is not visible.

nevermind the previous post. I found an option that allows the mouse pointer to be captured. Looks like I’m the silly one.

I do not have SnagIT, but i use a tool called Windows Clippings to take screenshots on Vista with the aero effects.

With that tool, i am not able to take screenshots of the software called Nokia Software Updater.

Try capturing this in SnagIt…

Play a movie in VLC and capture the VLC window. You will not get a real time snapshot of the movie. Instead a black rectangle in its place.

I just had this come up the other day. I’m trying to capture the Windows XP Login dialog box and the ensuing login message. I can’t figure out how to capture these since I can’t launch SnagIT before I’m logged in.

Is this possible?

You cannot take a screenshot of taking screenshot :-)

Many times, people ask me how to take screenshot in Mac (am on Mac), I can’t take a screenshot of taking screenshot with Grab/Jing/SnagIt. So I first setup a timed capture in Grab and then use the other one to take screenshot and wait till Grab takes a screenshot of that. If only the app allows to take a screenshot of itself in action.

Do I qualify?

Because I work away from the office a lot, I often have cause to access via a vpn online courseware I deliver for the UK MOD, to take screen shots for presentations or for error reporting/change control documentation. The vpn will not let me take screenshots - the PrintScreen command just maximises or minimises the screen, so I have to wait until I get into the office to do what I want to do. Hopefully Snagit will solve my productivity problem…

There are 2 things I can’t figure out how to capture.

1 - a rollover on rocketdock to capture the large icon and menu

2 - The SnagIt capture screen. When I have it up, I begin a capture and that screen minimizes away.

I’m guessing that capturing a frame from a streaming video that can’t be paused may be a problem.

Hi amit…..i take a lot of screenshots but one problem i have faced is taking screen shots of movies i play….i play them in media player…then pause to take a capture of a particular scene….but all i get is blank (albeit black)picture…i tried a lot including prtscr, faststone capture, snipy and finally i tried snagit…that too failed!!!

Hmm, two things I’ve never been able to capture are a) the mouse pointer and b) captures of videos rendered using hardware overlays

Can I capture the BSOD ?

It wouldn’t be so hard - I usually cannot get Snagit (I use v8) to capture the Firefox one-click bookmark popup (that comes up after clicking the star twice).

Am not sure if this qualifies - would be glad to try and find something else if this doesn’t make the cut.

Interesting contest and I would love to be a part of it just as much as I love SnagIT. But the rules you have stated are confusing..

What does this mean? If something is captured, it means it can be saved as an image.. ain’t it? Because having a rule “cannot be captured” and yet “saved as an image” is making the rules tougher I believe.

If you can revise and come back to us saying… “show us something that you cannot capture in SnagIT” and we will give a a free license.. that will certainly make sense.

where do i submit my screenshots?

I hope tht this is the right place for the contest. Quite simply, active screen savers cannot be saved with screen capture software because as soon as you would define the area and try to capture it, your activity shuts off the screen saver.

I have failed to capture and save the Piclens Firefox add on when opened in the Firefox browser.Piclens is a visual browser which looks nice when browsing photos and videos from the internet

I am attempting to win a free license of SnagIT 9, something which cant be captured and saved as an Image is Xwindows flickering screen.

If you set XDISPLAY to a windows from Linux export display option, if it paints in more than one window (i.e mostly on the MODAL window and original window)then it might flicker. Solution for it is to set the Xwindows option to display in one window. Which means paint on focused window.

Here’s one that had me bothered for a long time - try to capture a screenshot of a video playing in Windows Media Player.

I’m guessing you’ll keep getting a blank screen where the video should should be. The trick is to go to Tools > Options > Performance > Video Acceleration and turn it off.

I am using a MAC with a desktop manager progrm that allows me to have 4 desktop screen that I can toggle around. I cant seem to find a software that can record all the 4 screens when I toggle them. Can Snagit 9 do that?

If you have a web form that scrolls and you want to capture that then you have to do two screen grabs for each screen and then merge the screens together. I faced this problem as we had the errors shown on top of the screen but the value that was causing the error could be seen only if you scrolled right to the bottom. I use snagit 7.2.5 so not sure if this is fixed in a newer version.

Looks like quite a few people before me mentioned the taking-screenshot-of-a-video issue. Odd, when I posted there were no comments but now when I come back to this page, mine’s at the bottom! Oh well :)

Like I posted earlier, the trick is to turn off video/hardware acceleration (the option could be named video overlay as in VLC). This will allow you to take a screenshot as you normally would.

VLC also has an option to take a ‘Snapshot’ that lets you save the image without other tools.

You cannot capture Windows Vista’s UAC prompts with Snag It because it uses Secure Desktop mode.

Amit, I remember having a problem in capturing imagery off Google Earth using SnagIt where I wanted a larger capture than what was available on screen. But there was no way I could get Google Earth to scroll and capture at the same time

One cannot take snapshot of start menu and all programs in XP and vista both.

It cannot capture the following:

1. Snagit or other screen-capture program cannot capture itself… ;)
2. UAC prompts in Vista.
3. The login screen at startup of windows.
4. BIOS!
5. Bluescreen errors.
6. Graphics of 3D games.

There may be more but I have these in my knowledge!

I wish we could capture the screen when they hang - or the Blue Screen — to send to IT for debug.

Even with the option to capture mouse pointer enabled, it is impossible to capture the pointer trail (once this is enabled too!)

we cannot take the screenshot of startup screen of programs like microsoft outlook.. also when the computer is busy, we cannot take the screenshot of the hour glass pointer

It is the screen savers ! I have some Good screen savers and wants to record them as Video and capture as Image ! But , can’t find any tool for this . I have SnagIt 8 and Camtasia Studio both ….. but this feature is missing in them !

When working with a team of students on an Earth Day project in Vuvox collage, I found I could not download the final collage. I tried Snagit to capture the image as it scrolled horizontally across my screen, but got a very jerky rendition even when I popped the fps to the highest Snagit would allow. I could find no way to get a smooth-sliding version of the wonderful work my kids had done.

Snag It cannot capture the below things

1)Start Up menu bar (stated above)
2)Options of the right click menu.
3)After changing properties on desktop , the “Please Wait” cannot be captured.
4)After clicking turn off computer the 3 options displayed ie Shut down , Restart, Stand By.
5) When switched on the user accounts and other options cannot be captured.
6)The drop down menus of approx every software of application cannot be captured.

There are still many things which cannot be captured by Snag It or any such tool.

I think snag it can’t capture the capturing window or preview window of the selected capture area display.Though It can capture every other thing in your desktop.

We cannot capture the booting process (startup) of our computer!

If SnagIt has never loaded/started in the first place (e.g. during startup, at the logon screen, BIOS) how can it take screenshots?

The best part of snag it, I like the most is scrolling window

We cannot capture, a TASKBAR MOVING,

For example,

please read my steps to understand what I said well,

1) I think every one knows about taskbar.
2) It will be down on our desktop, in default.
3) We can unlock the task bar and keep it any where in the desktop, I mean repostition it any where in the desktop.
4) So , do these things, unlock the taskbar, and place it on the top, right, left by just dragging it.

This is the things that snagit cannot capture.

Haha I became a scientist, finally i discovered something for snagit and myself too.

Wat if i want to capture snagit windows with snagit itself?

Can’t it be counted as an application on the desktop….just a thought.

Scrolling pages

I can’t capture the add/remove programs section in windows xp home that has all the programs. It’s a scroll down box and I did it once, but I’ve never been able to recreate the feat with my current version of Snag (8.2.3). SnagIt doesn’t do too well with side-scrolling.

I can’t screen-capture part of some movies I’ve watched. Every time I tried I always ended up with blank dark screen. I don’t know what kind of protection used at that movie.

Thse are my entries,

Only one thing not capture by SnagIt 9 is that. When press print screen button by keyboard.

I don’t have any idea to capture objects with ZOOMing ! I want to change the scale ! This can be done by resizing the captured image , but it costs quality !

I found another one. SnagIt fails to make a full capture past 773 x 1727 (dimensions) when I try to capture the “Patched Programs” section of the Secunia PSI software program. It scrolls down as if to take the whole snapshot and stops when it gets to 773 x 1727. Does this count? :)

And , one thing more : Whenever I tried to capture an entire webpage using SnagIt 8 ( auto-scroll ) it fails to capture the entire width of the page :( !

It simply capture the page by scrolling through vertical scroll-bar ! What about Wider pages ? It don’t consider Horizontal scroll bar !!!!

Moreover , I can’t find another tool or screen-capture software for this !

You cannot capture Google Talk conversation in “SCROLL” mode with Snagit. I have been using Snagit and other screenshot programs but they fail to auto-scroll the gtalk chat window.

I think every one knows about Task bar displaying time at right bottom of our desktop,

It changes for every 60 seconds or 1 minute,

Snag it cannot capture the changing time in our desktop and even for every 12 hours there will be change in A.m and P.m, snag it cannot capture the change of am to pm and pm to am as well.

I do tons of screen captures but the only thing I found that I cannot capture is a UAC prompted message in Windows Vista. The only way I could get this is via digital camera.

You mean that if I find something on my screen that SnagIt “won’t” capture I get a copy?

Wouldn’t that be akin to saying, if you find a piece of software that doesn’t work (or run on your PC) we will give you a copy of it?

The SnagIt punch-line says “Save nothing…save everything.”; so probably there ISN’T anything on our desktop that cannot be captured by SnagIt.

Sounds dumb, but everyone else has pointed out all other stuff so I will stick with mine.

You can not capture the IRM protected content sent using MS office 2007 / MS Exchange 2007. You can set the protection so as not to let screen capture applications do their work. IRM works for data , image files .

It is really simple, I think every one has to check out the ad thats at the right top corner regarding snag it software which says “save nothing…….. save every thing” - I agree with this, Snagit can capture any thing and every thing

I changed my mind.It can capture everything on desktop….

The only thing SNAGIT can’t copy is a window that you can’t see…ie it’s behind another window!

This is a cop out - I really can’t think of anything it can’t capture…

Currently using SNAGIT 7. Please can I have a copy of 9?

SnagIt cannot capture the Mac section of my desktop when running Windows in Unity mode via VMWare Fusion

with snagit you cannot capture the dead pixels on your monitor!

If you increase the fontsize in Windows (to get the text more readable when making shots of applications.)
It is impossible to make shots of things you’re dragging, or holding with the mouse, when fontsize is increased

Cause when you snap the shot, somehow snagit zooms in which makes
a) the mouse all of a sudden in a different spot
b) you lose whatever you are dragging

That’s the only thing so far I encountered that gave problems. The only solution was to set fonts to normal size again for that particular shot.

ow the reason why I increased the fonts was because to get the screenshots at 72 pixels per inch (good enough quality to print) you have to shrink it, and by increasing the fontsize you get the normalfontsize when shrinked so it’s still readable ;)

Don’t know if this qualifies as not capturable

I cannot take screen shots of videos playing in Windows Media Player (or other media players) using a screen capture program or the Print Screen button because there is some sort of layer in players that screen capture programs cannot go past through or something. If I want to take screen captures of videos, I’d use a different program or the video player itself (if it has screen capturing capability).

I don’t know if this entry is valid since you have to open a media player so it can appear on your screen. It’s not something you find on your desktop right away.

I know SnagIt can capture a scrolling web page but what if you only want the part of the page that scrolls horizontally. The example would be a page that scrolls both horizontally and vertically but you want to capture all of the screen that scrolls horizontally and could care less about the vertical scroll. I know I can take a screen capture that does both but usually lose some of the important screen information if the page is really large.

You can’t capture screenshots of SnagIt using SnagIt.

Can’t take pictures of SnagIT ANYTHING. This is:
• No Snag it Tool tip on the xp taskbar, where lies all the running applications
• No Snag it Tool tip in the Snag it Menu
• I can’t even Take a Snapshot (Print Screen) of Snag it Preferences, Try it…

I wish that I can take a Snapshot (Print Screen) of Snag it taking a Snapshot. Maybe there is a way without no third party applications such as Cam Studio

Things like the BIOS, bootup screen, login screen, BSOD (if you can reproduce it), etc. can be captured using a Virtual Machine.

Sometimes I need to document maintenance tasks on a server, best done through Remote Desktop (RDP). Snag It can’t be installed on servers for policy reasons and when running a full screen RDP session, the Snag It hotkeys get sent to the server and don’t trigger the local machine Snag It instance. This makes capturing full screen RDP screenshots difficult.

You cannot capture DirectX output, or oddly shaped portions of a screen (like an L-shaped box).

Cannot take screenshot of the contents of a minimized window! (which can be seen as taskbar preview in vista by default and in other OSes using some 3P tools).

SnagIt cannot capture specific defined sequence or sequences of specific defined object or subject, whether in a video, a flash, an animated GIF or animated screensaver, etc.

For example, if you have a screen (of a video, a flash, an animated GIF or animated screensaver) showing two gladiators having a swordfight and you only wish to take moving screenshots (or video capture) of a specific defined sequence of only one of the gladiators and not the other, I am afraid SnagIt cannot handle.

For avoidance of doubt,
Gladiators = objects, subjects

Swordfight = moving sequence

Capture sequence of only one gladiator = specific defined capture

SnagIT cannot capture a scrolling window screen shot of the “Currently installed programs” list within Add or Remove Programs via the Control Panel. I’m actually needing this functionality because I’m getting ready to re-do a computer and would love to have this list as a backup.

snagit can not capture things shown inside of virtual machines, the key commands will not work in the VM’s

Although Snagit is able to capture the Aero interface effects, the (complete) window shadow is neither captured nor emulated.
