Google Docs Presentations allows PPT files only upto 10 MB in size while Slideshare imposes a 30 MB limit. What do you when your PPT file(s) exceed that maximum size limit?
Tools like PPTminimizer will quickly compresses your large PowerPoint Presentations into smaller files (without sacrificing quality) so that you easily send them as email attachments or upload to any of those PowerPoint hosting sites.
The software costs ~$30 but you can have it for free as we have ten licenses of PPTminimizer to give away. Just leave a comment below with your name, email address and website, if any. Would be wonderful if you can also share how you plan to use the software.
Here’s how PPTminimizer works – You select one (or multiple) PPT files and drag them onto PPTminimizer. It will automatically optimize the graphics and embedded objects in the presentations which are generally responsible for the large size. It integrates with Microsoft Outlook and will auto-compress the PPT attachments before sending them in email messages.
Other than the standard ppt and pps formats, PPTminimizer 3.0 also support the new PowerPoint 2007 formats (pptx) and is compatible with Windows Vista. Geetesh has a more in-depth review of PPTminimizer.
We will get in touch with you later this week if you are among the lucky winners. Good luck.

Getting presentation size small enough is a big problem. Would love to have a copy of pptminimizer.

This sounds like a great app and particularly useful with all the online sharing sites. I’d love to give it a try.

I do this thing manually often, as I received a lrage number of emails with gargantuan powerpoint attachments at work. Because of poor image embedding practices, slides that can only be less than 1MB, can easily balloon to more than 50MB. This software will save me lots of time shrinking ppt file sizes, presumably. Can’t wait.

I fill my .ppt presentations with images and obviously they get very big very fast; I usually send (and receive, of course) several presentations per day. I would love to use the optimizer.

Sounds too good to be true that it can shrink the size without sacrificing quality. I am usually responsible for “death by powerpoint”, and maybe a free license for me, would make it less painful for all those who receive e-mails from me. In the interest of making cyberworld a better place to surf in, I hope I am one of the lucky guys next week.

Seems like a good tool. There is another one called Nxpowerlite that comes from free. It is a small desktop application that gives you three levels of compression.
I blogged about it here:

I’d like one. I coordinate a mailing list for the Bombay Quiz Club, and we share PPT files of the quizzes conducted by our members, which usually end up much larger than most emailers would permit. This would help greatly.

I have recently retired and now have more time to learn and improve my computerskills but am less able to afford software licences so a copy of this program would enable me to optimise my powerpoint photo shows which I like to produce.
Written by Bill C on 10.31.07
Thanks a lot, Amit for making me one of the lucky winners. I have just downloaded and installed it. The tool looks neat and is light on resources – around 3 MB only. I guess what I will find very handy are the Powerpoint and Outlook addins. That way I can optimise my presentations while working on the ppt itself or before sending it off. Let me use it for some time as my presentations come along and see how it goes.
Written by HH on 11.03.07
Amit, I believe I was one of the early commenter of this post. I can remember reading that this will be one of the basis for the selection. I’ll still wait though for you to honor your word.

How much compression is achieved using this s/w? I have noticed that 7-zip is generally able to achieve compression of around 80% for PPT’s and Doc’s. Hence a 30 MB file would be reduced by 24MB, good enough to be mailed easily by most email programs.

Hi Amrit — I hope I’m not too late for the free software contest. I work in a public school where all the kids work on individual lessons. In the past month I’ve taught myself how to use Google Page Creator and how to build Powerpoint presentations — in an effort to provide exciting, interesting, and motivating self-instructional tools to my kids. Now I have both going, but as you state above — I can’t use them together because my PPT’s are too big. I have tried to compress the pictures using the Picture tool in PPT but that actually made the thing bigger! (I think I created a monster!) I am struggling and could really use your help.

Phil

Great software. I don’t know how they do it.
I tutor inner city students who need help in math and science. Part of the strategy is to get them to demonstrate their work in PowerPoint. Of course, the files can become huge. I’d love to shrink them down to a more share-able size.

I receive a lot of amateur ppt’s from friends, but sometimes do not forward them for the lenght of them, mostly uneeded. I’d like a way to minimize them to forward, and I suggest that you mark these with your propaganda like ’shrunk by pptminimizer’ when free copies where used.
Another thing that would be useful was to eliminate all those idiotic animations of text amateurs love to create but viewers hate.
Cheers from Rio.

I receive powerpoints from parishioners to put up the church website but some have used pictures far larger than needed. In their present form many will slow down access to the site and optimizing each graphic takes more time than I can spare.

I am responsible for presentations for trainers, teachers, health professionals etc. who are working with schoolchildren to reduce childhood obesity. The scheme is called DASH – Do Activity Stay Healthy – and this software would make all our lives much easier. The nature of the presentations is that they are graphics heavy, to engage children and get the message across, so Pptminimizer would be a tremendous asset – I will keep my fingers crossed!
Yours in hope, Barbara

It would be wonderful to have a program like this. I have been trying to reduce a 21 MG PowerPoint Show down to about 4 MG for the Web, but it seems impossible. Will this program do that, if so would you please send me one too? Pretty please? Thank you!

I know this software and used it already several times. I have some ppt presentations from 800 Kb up 2,6 Mb, which is too much for the net. In minimized format it’s easier to deliver, to send and to deal with.

It’s simply a great idea to compress bulky Powerpoint files. But I do not know whether this is also useful for compressing Corel WP Office files,Star/Open Office “Show” files or equivalent to PPT/PPS files of other office suites.

Need to upload large PowerPoint file with graphics in it. Too large to upload to Google Docs… too large to email for most spam filters, even to people I know. Copying to clipboard leaves graphics behind.
How to get into Google Docs with the graphics so I can email the URL address for people to view?
Help!
Thanks.
