CNN Holograms are actually Tomograms

CNN literally wowed their audience yesterday when they used the hologram technology to virtually transport 3D reporters from Chicago to their newsroom located in New York.

But now some some news reports say that what CNN referred to as "holograms" aren’t holograms at all but "tomograms."

CBS says that the images were tomograms, which are images that are captured from all sides, reconstructed by computers, then displayed on screen. Holograms, on the other hand, are projected into space.

National Post created an illustration (see above) to explain, what they say is, CNN’s trickery.

Well, we can’t really blame the CNN anchors here for saying "hologram" instead of "tologram" but what CNN did was something very unique and impressive nonetheless.

a gimmick: what’s all this fuss about?

[rant]
Its bloody complicated, bloody expensive, not commercially viable… and sorry kids; it’s not going to be used in Far Cry 3… talking about hypes…. wake up virtual ppl; there is a real life economic crisis going on out there in the real world.. it’s going to hit you hard if you stay out in Cyberspace tooo long.

sorry to disturb you in your dreamworld i just had to get this of my chest.

Was the hologram/tomogram thing really amazing? I mean why not just present her on a pane of the screen, or switch between the two feeds?

It wasn’t that astounding. I’ve seen better.

Ok so is it a Tologram or a Tomogram? This article says both.

Whether hologram or tologram, it certainly wasn’t THAT amazing.

Such a cheesy gimmick. I think it’d be more fun to put their field reporters up on the Magic Wall so John King could multi-touch them while they’re talking. “Let’s take a look at these errant nostril hairs here…zooooooom….”

This is really stupid. The technology of overlaying videos in real time has been around over 20 years and is used daily in the media world.

This is not a hologram at all.
