You may have come across several web based faxing services that let you send faxes over the Internet for free but they all impose certain limitations.
For instance, they may not let you fax more than two pages at once or may add advertisements in the fax cover sheet or may not support rich text documents.
drop.io (pronounced as "drop-ee-o") overcomes all such problems and lets you fax Word documents, PDF files and even Excel a spreadsheet via Internet to any phone number in the United States for free.
You can send unlimited number of faxes without registration, there are no ads attached to the fax sheets and each fax document can have up to 20 pages.
To send a fax, just upload the document (or PDF) to drop.io and click the "Drop It" button. On the next screen, click the ’send as fax’ near your document and enter the 10 digit fax number of the recipient. Hit Send and your fax will be printed on the recipient’s fax machine in few minutes.
The drop.io may useful for content publishers outside US as well if they need to fax DMCA notices (for reporting plagiarism) to a web hosting company that may be based in US.

Interesting…earlier drop.io used to be a file hosting service for individuals…a similar sort though not a full fledged service. The most interesting feature I liked at drop.io was: you call a drop.io number > punch in your PIN > start speaking/recording whatever you want. Open link and you see the telephone conversation as an mp3 file. Yup, you can listen to it instantly and even download for free. Best useful when you want to convey a message to someone who is unavailable at the moment. Just record your message and send an email to the recipient giving him/her your drop.io URL. As easy as 1-2-3.

The service is cool. But What should be their revenue model ?

ok, not sure. the reason I say it doesn’t support 2007 format is because it won’t recognize my uploaded file as a document, while it classifies my PDF file immediately as a Document.
What’s more, in the ‘interactive’ mode, where I can see a preview of the PDF file, I can’t see a preview of the DOCX file. I have not tested the fax part.
Sadly, the same problem exists for DOC (word 2003) format, so I don’t know if it will fax the DOC or not.

Someone beat me to it. The Fax feature is not there or at least they are referring to it in the sentence with the word “premium”.
