This excerpt is from a recent email by Steve Ballmer where explains Microsoft’s strategy for competing with Google:
"We’ll make progress against Google in search first by upping the ante in R&D through organic innovation and strategic acquisitions.
Second, we will out-innovate Google in key areas - we’re already seeing this in our maps and news search.
Third, we are going to reinvent the search category through user experience and business model innovation. We’ll introduce new approaches that move beyond a white page with 10 blue links to provide customers with a customized view of their world."

…I am dead sure that nobody could even touch The Google in ‘Search’ field, at least for coming few years, but ‘dreams’ are always good to compete, no harm? : )

There are no other lessons.
Does he even know what he is talking about?
I am waiting for microsoft to difficult to google.
But its live maps are not good and even it has to improve its live.com.
Atlast he accepted that MS stands behind Google as of now

You see, its all about bringing the innovation first. Google innovated search, Microsoft just followed it.
Maybe many Indian Search engines Guruji , Onyomo etc. have tried to follow the suit. But nothing compares to Google.
The RnD put behind google is immense, and unmatchable
microsoft can only dream about defeating google…instead google should try to enter the operating system market through linux..only then microsoft will be on its toes.. :)

We all complain about microsoft not being able to compete against google.Google sure is a great search engine,it wins hearts when it comes to simplicity and user driven approach.
What operating system does google run on? The windows OS
Most employees at google all over the world run microsoft as their OS.Alot of you may argue about MAC,mac to me is just eye candy,and is not a business machine.
All these companies learned the microsoft way.And till date microsoft is KING when it comes to Operating Systems.

It’s not true that nobody can’t beat google.Most of the algorithm ,that do reliable search, are just acquired from the university students, for a lump sum of money. even though people have good algo and their implementation, they fail to have large hardware, scalabilty , piping ,so they ended up selling or joining google.Since google management knows their own shoes ( buisness) they try to buy buisness ahead of microsoft.
