Starting next month, Microsoft Office 2007 suite will be available on rent for $70 per year. Called Microsoft Equipt, this consists of Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Live OneCare.
A Microsoft Equipt subscription includes installation on three home computers. Microsoft says that Equipt is for consumers, students or people who are buying new PCs and who are looking for security and antivirus features.
Interestingly, you can buy the software duo from Amazon for $130 which is less than twice the annual cost that you would pay to rent the software.
The plus point is that if subscribe to Office 2007 on rent and Microsoft releases Office 2009 in the middle of your subscription period, you get to upgrade for free.
Adobe also offers Creative Suite for rent in Australia.

This makes me think that subscription may only work for Web based Services - Not for Desktop software.
