Go to LinkedIn or Twitter and you’ll find tons of people who claim themselves to be "social media experts".
These are mostly self taught "gurus" who, with their own experiments, have learned how to harness the full potential of wikis, blogs, social networking sites, podcasts and other forms of social media for the benefit of their clients.
Now if you are not a great self-learner but have plans of becoming a "social media consultant" in future, here’s something just for you.
A UK University is offering a Master’s degree in Social Media that will cover tools like Facebook, blogs, etc. It’s a one year (yes, you read that right) full-time classroom course with a £4,400 fee though the university will also help you find work placement with an organisation that uses social media or is exploring social media.
What is Social Media?

Ankita – Instead of spending $10k for a 48 week course on “social media”, you can consider following blogs of people in the social media space – that should suffice though you won’t earn a degree.

I am in the UK and will actually go to the preliminary interview to stake this out. I will have a bunch of questions ready to fire out, but the most advantage of this venture will be the key contacts you make in networking and the reputation that you receive afterwards. If you smart enough then you can lay a claim to be the one the first to receive a degree in social media and push your way up the ladder.

Thanks for sharing this, Amit.
Education is valuable, but I wonder how this kind of degree would change the landscape of workplaces. How are they advertising this? What is the benefit to this degree? What kind of job does it afford? Does it make one more marketable? Why does it need to be a Master’s degree? Can’t it be an undergrad certificate? How much advanced computer/internet does one really need to navigate and successfully utilize social media??
Just a list of doubts!

A uni here in Australia (i will not mention) offers online marketing as a subject in their marketing major and they spend almost half the course (7 weeks) just going through material from the Google Adword Training Lab. $4000AUS for a subject you can cover yourself for free and take a test for $50US, just show that universities will bleed any hot topic for cash.
