Google is proud of the fact that news headline that appear in Google News are selected entirely by computer algorithms and that no human editors are involved in selecting the stories that deserve top placement.

Their algorithm however made an embarrassing mistake today.

Google News - Entertainment

If you look at the Entertainment section of Google News India now, the top news headline is about some Air India employees who misbehaved with a nine-year-old girl passenger at an airport in Kolkata.

This is a shocking story that definitely needs to be highlighted but it certainly doesn’t fit the “Entertainment” category as has been selected by Google algorithms.

I don’t think Google News can auto-fix such bad placements but human editors can. Thanks Nidhi Dewan for the tip.
