Google Pages is still a part of Google Labs but this web page creator software will never get a chance to graduate from labs as it is getting replaced by Google Sites – a new product similar to Google Pages but with a wiki.
Google has stopped accepting new sign-ups for Google Page Creator though existing users can continue using the product like before.
However, all your files, images and web pages stored in Google Pages will get shifted to Google Sites later this year. This may be a concern for some as it will lead to broken links because Google Sites and Google Pages follow a different URL structure.
A big difference between Google Page Creator and Google Sites is that the former lets you upload HTML pages that are created externally – this is something you’ll really miss when the Google Pages to Google Sites transition is complete. Thanks Satish.

Interesting. Wiki’s have gained in importance. Incorporating the ability of Wiki is definitely a good move on part of Google.

There was no point in continuing with both of them. These were pretty much overlapping services in their portfolio.
Google now allows you to map your google sites to a subdomain [available only through Google Apps].
Google sites is a better choice IMO as you can use it both as a wiki as well as a website [by not giving edit privileges]

i’m sure there will be workarounds that will surface, but there definitely are a lot of people out there who will be really pissed about this move by google as they have hundreds if not thousands of hours devoted to their google pages sites. GPC was a great way for the small business to create something substantial with little money. Nevertheless, I am anxious to see what happens. Any word on a closing date yet, Amit?

Yeah, Mecah’s got the point. I tried both of them and they are pretty similar. As for justin, I just wanted to say that I’m sorry to hear that you spent much time on Google Page Creator. Personally, I never considered it as a real option for serious websites.

i appreciate your sentiment Ky..i actually haven’t personally spent the “hundreds of hours” myself, but its not hard to find other who have, devoting so much time trying to hack the stylesheets, trick the pages out etc. there are actually some out there who have built very elaborate tutorials on the GPC platform…down the drain. i just thought it was kinda fun to see what i could make with it…the ’serious’ website is being built…GPC is capable of only so much…which isnt much..

The problem with this is, I use Google Page Creator to host a lot of small images for my blog (buttons, my logos, and such). I also have a friend who uses Page Creator as his website. Broken links are for n00bs; “Cool URIs Don’t Change.”

Justin,
Google as announced that current Google pages users will be transitioned to Google sites later this year. That way noone will lose all their time.

I like how we GPages users will be “transitioned”. That implies that there will be some backwards-compatibility. Perhaps Google has a plan to make sure links don’t break…? *crosses fingers*

Well in my case I am using GPC for hosting my sites HTML files, but while I tried with SITES it doesn’t allow to host any HTML files. I don’t know why the hell Google is doing this, but I seriously think GPC is far far better than SITES…

With Google Page Creator you could upload HTML files and it was much easier to make your pages look exactly the way you wanted using uploaded HTML files and CSS files (or CSS in HTML). With Google Sites you can’t use uploaded HTML files with CSS and you can’t use scripting either.
When I tried moving my Google Page Creator pages to Google Sites, I had to copy and paste the HTML source from the HTML files and change and tweak the HTML and it still looks disgusting. Also, my week old Google Sites website got banned, because its spam filter sucks so I had to contact the Google Sites team to get my Google Sites website back. Now my pages are back to Google Page Creator and I’m not sure what I should do. Google Sites is definitely Beta and should be told on every page on that service.

Gonna miss Google Page Creator after this, really hope that Google Sites will add features like Google Page Creator..

Google Sites is the WORST product for creating webpages. It is the most pathetic, user-unfriendly and ugliest webpage site in the world.
No HTML and also now no support for existing Google Pages. They disabled the right to change Pages template or delete your page URL.
I think all the smart people at Google have joined Microsoft and hence IDIOTS are managing Google products.
THAT IS THE ONLY LOGICAL EXPLANATION.
When people create their worthless useless ugly websites using Google Sites – the world wide web will see new heights of worthlessness and user-irritation.
I hope Microsoft comes out with a good webpages service soon or I will have to go back to Geocities. At least Yahoo does not run their business on whims and fancies of STUPID managers such as Google does.
BACK TO YAHOO GEOCITIES people ! ! !

One step forward, two steps back…
Google Sites with the addition of Google Pages’ features or vice-versa would be great! Not holding my breath…

Very client unfriendly action from GOOGLE, indeed.
I’m confident that GOOGLE will find a solution soon, as otherwise a lot of customers will loose confidence in GOOGLE.
And – as we’ve seen lately – CONFIDENCE = MONEY

i’m actually happy these days that Google made this announcement, as it forced me to finally dig in and create a real website for my father’s company. In effect, palmettoequipment.com has been born so all of the land surveyors out there no longer need to visit the extinct googlepages site…
