Spam inside Orkut Scrapbook
Orkut Scrapbook is much like the Facebook Wall with one difference - you can publish the same message on the scrapbook of all your Orkut friends in one click using some third-party hacks.
And as these hacks are getting popular, Orkut scrapbooks are looking more like junkyards.
And unfortunately, there’s no easy way for you to block people from flooding your scrapbook with bulk messages other than removing that person from your friends list.
The scrapbook is definitely the most popular feature of Orkut but with all this spam, Orkut may have started to lose its charm.

Orkut never really had any charm, it was more of an accident that it got popular in India. Today Morning as I checked my orkut account needless to say I saw many such messages but those were all wishing me Merry Christmas :). There are small checks in place, like if you scrap too many people (250+) too quickly they freeze the account for several hours. But Orkut is much easier and prone to spam then any other social network. Many of my friends have already migrated to facebook and more are doing so.
I can’t agree more with you and Asankhaya. Actually, Orkut doesn’t encourage users to use those scripts. I’ve been seeing security tips asking me to avoid any scripts.
If this goes on, I’ll delete my profile!
I don’t get it, why Orkut doesn’t introduce a feature to scrap all friends ? Wouldn’t that make things easy ?
Sharma was right in some terms….those small checks are just not sufficient!.
This script,being spread virally by a community on Orkut itself,can ease the work for members who need to wish their friends on a festival occasion.On the darker side,spammers take advantage of this too…..Orkut need to take care of this!!.
Scrapping all friends is of no use…..
The charm of orkut is bound to vanish with such “spamming” methods
I kinnda like this feature, since it helps to message all my friends in my list, but still it has a restriction - of some 280 friends only!!
Orkut was coded by a universty graduate, and it does not have that many features (like facebook has) still its full of Bugs.
Orkut team has added lot of new features in 2007 which were already available in facebook (they all look exact copy of facebook like updates from firends, make your album , scrapbook private).
This is just the start of spamming, let the sandbox applications go live and we will have lots of it.
I use both Orkut and Facebook, but Facebook is much better.. too bad all of my friends are still stuck on Orkut.
I like this script.. instead of scrapping one by one.. i can just wish all my friends using this script.. much better than opening 100+ scrapbooks and leaving a scrap..
If Orkut had this script built-in would that be called spam/feature?
It depends on the use/abuse of the feature… if somebody uses it for bulk marketing or chain-mail kinda stuff.. call them spam.. Not the Xmas Greetings!!
There are few easy ways for this I guess..
As you suggested..delete that user from your list.
And leave useless communities. I got only 80 friends and 9 communities and I have been using orkut since its launch and I do not receive any kind of spam.
let me know is there any chance for that 3rd party to get our google password? its not possible to get our pwd by this script I guess but I’m not 100% sure!… let me know…
Orkut isn’t incredibly popular in the UK…at least, nobody i know use it.
My friends are divided between facebook and myspace. My younger sister uses bebo…which is huge for teens
