If you like to turn off Facebook chat, click the chat icon in the lower right corner of your Facebook page and select ‘Go Offline’.
None of your Facebook friends can IM you as your name won’t show up in their friends list even though you are logged in. And this setting is preserved for future sessions as well.

This is great. Nothing more annoying when you’re busy and some random person (who you might actually be glad to hear from, but still) buttonholes you.
I’m sure it’s similar, but I really need to do this in gmail.
