Smart and Effective Rich Media Advertising Campaigns from HP

hp-touchsmart-pc HP is running an innovative advertising campaign on some technology blogs for their upcoming TouchSmart series which are desktop computers but with Tablet PC like touch screen.

These ads are done in Adobe Flash and pop-up when you hover the mouse over the ad.

The more impressive part is the 3D look and the interactive nature of these ads - you can read specs of the machine, watch demo videos or even place an order from the ad itself without visiting the advertiser’s website.

I spotted the HP ad on Lifehacker but it’s no longer there. You can however still experience the ad from the screencast video video.

Am not sure if such an interactive effect is possible with the upcoming Google Gadget ads but this is definitely very effective and non-obtrusive rich media advertising.

Such adds might attract some serious eye balls. But wont that make pages havier..? I mean wont such adds take a long time to load..? Remeber the 4 second rule.. It might be a failure on slow connections.

The ads are classy and will ensure the messages goes deep into the mind of the viewer. And Arun, the page loading has not taken too much time(i checked at 128kbps speed). Of course, if you are using a dial up or any slow connection, it might not show easily. Also these ads are directed at people who normally use average or above average speeds for their net- thats what my feeling is.

Well I had been using a slow connection years back and I know exactly how people get frustrated when pages dont comeup. If these adds are targetted based on speed then its fine, i mean thats something great

Hello everyone,

I’m one of the developers at Eyeblaster that worked on the ad and happy to see the legs this thing has been getting. Original design and concepts were done by Goodby in San Francisco.

The ad is not nearly as heavy as it looks. Using Papervision3D removed the need for heavy graphics. Most everything you see is animated using a 3D engine. This allowed us to keep file size to a minimum while also delivering cool looking creative.

This was a very interesting project. The end product is definately on the cutting edge of online ads. It is a fine balance of code and graphics to find a happy medium the websites will accept and viewers will enjoy.

Glad you enjoyed it. :)

From experience, the ad server would only serve these rich media ads to broadband users, as publishers normally QC the ads inorder not to affect user experience.

On top of that, the norm for such implementation would include using a polish banner download. So the initial ad is a standard flash banner, only when mouse over will other parts of the ad be activated.

Would it also appear with Google Adsense Publishers too?? Time will tell!

HP always has some innovative programmes, I could never forgot the free HP contest on Labnol, but oops! I missed it, I wish it may come again…

Thts very nice PC..

I have see this pc review yesterday on CNBC aawaz

Thanks for capturing and sharing the video of that really well done 3d popout menu. Great that you got some feedback from an original developer, too– nice to get some bg.

Regarding “adding bulk to the page,” it’s all dynamically loaded, isn’t it? That makes for a super lightweight experience– innocuous banner ad comes to life in a most pleasantly elegant manner. Well done.
