In a clear indication that blogs are increasingly becoming mainstream in India, the Election Commission (EC) of India has objected to the fact that V S Acharya’s blog is hosted on the official site of Police Department, on the grounds that it violates the model code of conduct.

Acharya is currently the home minister of Karnataka.

For the uninitiated, this model code of conduct (PDF) comes into force once the EC announces dates for the Indian general elections and it strictly prohibits political use of any official institution in the country.

Other Indian politicians have also turned to the web for reaching out to younger voters – notably LK Advani, Laloo Prasad Yadav and Omar Abdullah though the last two have already abandoned their blogs.
