Cory Doctorow says that the headline and first sentence of a blog post should explain all things that a reader would need to know in order to skip the article.
Readers will forgive you for writing things that do not interest them if you make it easy for them to skip stuff they don’t care about.
Cory’s second advice for bloggers is not to split long articles into multiple pages.

Great post. Reminds us of journalism 101 and the information pyramid. Now if the video had been as concise as your text, it would have scored an A+. But there was too much extraneous info and people walking through the shot. It’s all good though. Thanks.

I’m not sure I agree about not splitting long blog posts. Personally I wouldn’t wade through a 10,000 word post in one sitting. I’d prefer to see it split up into bite sized chunks.
