Some Good Advice on Blogging from Successful Bloggers

blog-advice Kimberly Palmer at US News has published some nice tips on blogging based on opinions of other successful bloggers. Two points that stand out:

1. Get some traffic before you put ads in the blog - "Wait until you have 100,000 page views a month, because before that, any monetization will just make coffee money."

2. Stick to a niche but widen your focus - "Instead of picking a niche like diet tips, where there’s only so much you can write, instead pick a general way of looking at life or an area of interest that you’re passionate about."

You may want to bring down that 100k requirement a bit but useful advice otherwise. The story is in two parts - a) How to earn from blogs and b) How much do bloggers make.

I think that point about the ads is way off…if you build a loyal audience organically over time and then suddenly add ads you could alienate some of your most loyal readers. Add ads from the off and they know what they’re getting.

>Wait until you have 100,000 page

And try not to die of old age in the process. It’s not advice on blogging, it’s advice on making money.

Amit,

I could not got you on point #1 above, perhaps you are in a mood of joke?! 1 lac page viewsa month is still not possible for many big bloggers?! Am I wrong?

Sorry but I think the first tip is kinda arrogant.
My blog has only 18000 pageviews per month and yet I am making a nice amount of money (just 800$ a month) - And yet, it is absolutely not coffee money for me. I don’t think so.
I think it is about time Mega blogs will stop giving us these kind of advices.
Every mega blog (including yours Amit) has started with 100 rss subscribers, and slowly made his way towards 20000.
Give Bloggers the hope to continue their blogging.

Yours
Danl

For point#1, the actual article does make the same argument as David in first comment.

The article does say that bloggers don’t have a uniform opinion on the subject. Some say that it is only “coffee money” and others say that even coffee money is Money.

Successful bloggers? Financially successful bloggers, you mean. If one doesn’t write for money, does that make a blogger less successful? Some of my most favorite blogs don’t have ads. I agree, rather arrogant advice, I feel.

100000 visits per month target may take whole life time for some…

these articles are worth reading..Thanks amit

“100,000 page views a month”! Then blogging will be practiced only by “elite top cream” of the lot and would not have become as popular as it is now! As most bloggers are writing it either as an hobby or part-time, there is no harm in earning money just for coffee!!! I hardly don’t believe that you will get that much traffic for certain niches no matter how good and useful your writing is!

Nice post Amit. But it should be stick to a “niche” and not nice, that had me confused a bit..

100k views a month.. lol Long way to go from my 15 page views..

It’s not about the Coffee money. In my opinion, you should put the ads from the day one.

1) If you put ads after you hit certain amount of pageviews, the existing loyal readers you’ve build until that point, might get annoyed after looking at ads suddenly. You may risk loosing them.

2) Existing readers will develop a blind eye for the ads very quickly, as they will know your site layout very well after visiting few times. It is better display the Ads from the day one, which will make your readers used to the ads.

Nwe to blogging but i do not think that i can wait for 100K hits before i think over revenue generation using Ads. As Danl righly said in his comments, place ads right from the day one to make your uses/members comfortable and grow your blog organically. This 100K hits might be one of the attraction by Kimberly Palmer to attract visitors like us.

To attain 100,000 page views per month is still a big task for most of the bloggers. Even if you have good content and write regularly, it will take around 6 months to attain that much of traffic. Untill unless you have so much unique content that people like and spread your blog through word of mouth.

A cold shower for new bloggers !

Waiting until we have 100,000 page views a month, bit hard but will try for it.

100,000 page view! too much ambitious! Those bloggers discuss the same facts and tips again and again

I would have to disagree as well. If you wait that long, it could be the death of your blog which was never really born.

I’m getting 30,000-40,000 views a month and although it is indeed a coffee money (about $1-$2 a day), it’s still kinda worth it ^^

Technology niche sucks by the way, because AdSense is paying peanuts for it
