BusinessWeek’s List of Most Powerful People in India Includes a Blogger

amit varma

Amit Varma, who authors the hugely popular India Uncut blog, has been named by BusinessWeek magazine as one of the most powerful people in India for 2009.

Blogger Amit Varma brings a particular libertarian point of view to his columns and blog items, but also a risqué sense of humor that keeps readers hooked. ..he represents a libertarian, anti-tax and anti-government sensibility that is still quite rare in the country.

Big round of applause!

Congrats to “Amit Varma”. And I am sure “Amit Agarwal” will be named number #1 someday soon.

Thanks Amit! :)

Great news…Congratulations Amit Varma…

Congratulation Amit!

And what about DI?

Why didn’t DI hit the list?? I don’t want to but business week is forcing me to doubt them. OK DI isn’t about India but I am VEERY sure that Amit Verma might have taken inspiration from Amit Agarwal at some point or the other before starting his blog :)

Wow! I admired Amit Varma a lot!

Its good to know that a blogger”s name is in a list of powerful people but I am unable to understand that why your name is not there in list. In my opinion you deserve most as your readers list is big than his list. He has only 7000 odd readers.

Hats off!

Heartly congratulations to Amit Varma.

Its great…congratulations to Amit Varma

Congratulations Amit Varma…

The time is Coming when Indian Bloggers will Rule Social & Internet Media.

Even You(Mr. Agarwal) you are a great Inspiration for Newbie Bloggers like Us.

Bull****…While it is nice to hear a blogger amongst us getting to the most powerful list, it only puts a question mark on the credibility of the list. For one, how many people read India Uncut? A link to my blog that was referenced quite a long time back hardly got me a few hundred visits. Ok, not bad..but, if that was from a blog that is getting a blogger to one of the most powerful people in India (and reminding ourselves once again that it is just a blog that is making him to the list), it is not a great compilation.

I admire Amit Varma..but to be honest,he is nowhere near to be known as India’s powerful…To be fair Amit (Amit Agarwal!), I would reckon you to be ahead in the powerful list simply because of the number of times you have been showcased in the media as a ‘blogger makes money’ story that has inspired a lot of youth to take up blogging seriously..now that is more inspirational(with no offence to Amit Varma..I still admire your blog)!

Some bloggers in the US and abroad are already more powerful than those in the mainstream media. BW is just recognizing this new trend. Congrats to Amit.

If it is solely on Indian-related blogging,
then he deserve it. Otherwise..
Congrats Amit Verma!

@Kanes,

Hei. Amit Varma is known for his polite words on bad things. But Amit Agarwal is a genuine techie and he is known for his tech factor and his style in blogging.

Dont’ ever criticize Amit Varma’s uniqueness and admire him. Even Amit Agarwal will agree with my points I think. He too will lead in this race soon.

@realtrix,

you should understand that the difference between Amit Agarwal’s blog to Amit Verma is that Amit Verma writes on social issues and it makes it more important and worth it to influence the society.

While Amit Agarwal definately is doing great job, the blog belongs to a different theme and approach.

@Joshua

I agree..But the fact is that Indian bloggers have not hit that influence level yet. Mike Arrington from TC can make or break startups today..He is, and should definitely be included in the Most Powerful list.

The list from BW definitely looks like trying to point to the trend of bloggers affecting opinion, and to do that got a writer who probably reads few blogs himself/herself.The writer probably just googled ‘Most POpular Indian bloggers’ and included one blogger from there..The lucky one happens to be Amit Verma.

@Priyankeshu
I totally agree.Can’t compare Amit Agarwal with Amit Verma. But neither is “powerful” or “influential”. We unfortunately don’t have one Indian blogger of that cadre yet. However, if you say “inspirational” Amit Agarwal would make the cut simply because he now has so many young Indians take up to blogging. And now, that is still a far cry from “powerful”, the league owned by the Ambanis and Tendulkars!

Congratulations
