Switch Cellular Operators Without Changing Mobile Phone Number

Mobile phone subscribers in the four metro cities can soon move from one cellular operator to another without having to change their mobile phone number.

So if you are not satisfied with the services offered by your current service provider, happily move over to another one without losing any of your existing contact information.

The facility will be available to mobile customers by the fourth quarter of 2008. via

This system i.e MNP(Mobile Number Portability) was introduced in Pakistan an year ago. Around the world this isn’t a 100% perfect system. It has some technical issues, not resolved yet.

About time. Mobile industry in India is a big mafia. They earn ultra big bucks using dirty lobbying and politics to manipulate licensing and spectrum allottment and pricing it high enough inspite of lousy service to make a deadly killing in earnings. All at common man’s expense. The ability to change provider keeping the number same is very critical for a customer to have choice (like in US) and I always wondered when that will happen in India (if the politics and lobbying allows).

Finally customer is king. I look forward to the day when the mobile bill gets to Rs 100 for unlimited calling anywhere in the world. You think I am kidding. Then you aren’t the geeky types who know where the tech-enabled world is headed. So take my advice, sell off those shares of mobile firms. They are a short term business. People aren’t idiots that they will continue to pay thousands of rupees per month for a service which the new technologies (internet led) enable for free (or near free). The future is always connected everywhere at dirt cheap prices.

Vodafone, Reliance, Airtel - its time to cash out and invest in new businesses. If not now, then max 2 to 3 years more.

Long live the customer and her choices.
