You can soon buy Apple iPhone in India from Vodafone through the official route - no unlocking tricks required.

iphone vodafone india It’s time for unlocked iPhone sellers in India to close shop as cell operator Vodafone is officially bringing the much awaited iPhone to the country in September this year. The price of iPhone in India will be around 28k.

Steve Jobs hinted last month that iPhone launch in India would happen sometime in 2008 and that Apple may not restrict the iPhone distribution deal to just one operator like they do in the US where AT&T is the exclusive distributor.

According to BS, Apple could make iPhone accessible though other telecom carriers in India like Reliance or Airtel. Earlier reports suggested that iPhone in India could debut at Reliance Retail – that obviously didn’t happen but the Vodafone – Apple deal suddenly makes lot of sense.

Interesting thing to check out would be whether they release the new 3G phone that is going to release soon. Or will they use India as the dumping ground for the current production – considering networks across Europe have started to decrease prices to get rid of current stock.

its really good that apple iphone’s coming to india…I ‘d also like them to open apple stores…i m an avid apple fan…so i’d also like them to set up factory in india….which would bring the costs down dramatically!!!

India is a potential market to tap in, but the price tag iphone is carrying is not good. Initially some of us in our company decided to buy it as and when it released in India, but with this price tag we all back off….By this lot of customers they will loose. They have to revise the Price again and launch. One more thing to consider is the performance of the phone, which we will know once it touches the ground and ppl start using it..

So the iPhone is finally coming to India, but at such an inflated price? The phone starts retailing in US @ US$ 199, roughly Rs.8,000.
Can anyone explain the reason behind the price difference?
I had expected Apple would select Idea to launch iPhone, as AT&T was involved in that joint venture, obviously Vodafone must have paid a huge sum to get the contract for India and elsewhere, which can explain it price of Rs.28k
The iPhone 3G is extremely feature rich, but beware that you won’t be able to squeeze it of all its qualities, as we still do not have 3G networks in India.
iPhone can launch the 2G version of the phone in India, at a reasonable price.

This seems to be weired on both apple’s and vodafone’s part that that why they are not willing to get it all from Indian market.. Indian market is a very price sensitive market.. in 28k i can get a Nokia N95 with loads of multimedia features packed along with it.. and the much hyped 3G is still waiting band width allocation.. so we cannot squeez the complete out of Iphone…
So that confuses me…. what am i supposed to pay Rs.28000/- for????? just a brand name????

I think apple should seriously think of opening a their retail stores in india and sell the unlocked version of the iphone…
Otherwise it will lead to the same trend again.. get an Iphone from US and get it unlocked here in India.. which is highly unreliable and one would lose Iphone’s warranty and may also end up losing its charm too…

Apple: if the price tag along with this Iphone is around Rs.28000($650) in India then you’ll lose a big chunk of potential buyers… and I’ll be definitely among them.. :(

hey guys check the date when this thread was created… it is of 14 April 2008 and the global Iphone scenario has changed dramatically after 10th Jun 2008…..

So i am not very sure if this thread is till giving the right data or not…………

It’s great to hear that iphone is finally coming to india in Sept’08.As we know in US it’s cost is 8K.But in india prices is around 28K which is not reasonable…too much difference between both the prices…it must be in between 10 to 15k so that people can easily buy it.

Who says it is 28 K in India. These all are gimmicking of some ppl. What is proof in your hand other than a wild guess? If you are not sure about a matter, please don’t tell something about it. Apple itself proclaimed that Apple’s iPhone 3G price will be same all over the world. At least without much difference they will try to make it available all over the world. For 28 K, a person can go for 3 and half unlocked Apple iPhones. So, it would be better going for an unlocked iPhone even though its warranty voids. Applie is not so foolish company do go for such a marketing strategy.
