Apple iPhone in India - iPhone 3G from Vodafone and Airtel

The iphone is a quad band device it can work normally in india after u get it unlocked but specific features might not be available like EDGE and some setting might be predefined..
Its always better to wait for the iphone to be launched cause its only 75% of the iphone which are being unlocked and you might just not be lucky..
So the best and the safest deal is to wait for the iphone to be launched in india and buy it from a retailer… and a correcting for my friend the iphone costs 499$(4GB) and 599$(8GB) i.e. 21000+ and 25000+ respectively not 16000 and 20000

iPhone is not very difficult to duplicate. I hope that very similar looking and performing phones will be shortly available in Asian markets.

Touchscreens with similar capabilities as iPhone are already available in the market and I even own a phone that works quite similar to iPhone. Linux, Windows mobile and Symbian already have browsers that can compete with that of iPhone.

It will take just few months for taiwan/china design houses to launch a reference design like iphone for mass manufaccturing.

I think many manufacturers will start supplying a similar phone to Indian market even before iPhone is formally launched in India.

Overall in Asian markets the success of Apple products is not so easy.

Hi Everyone, I have brought an iphone. All I want to do is to transfer some music from the laptop to my phone. I have downloaded the itunes from the apple website. Should I go ahead and sync up the phone and the system and download the music?

When you sync your phone with itunes, switch off your wireless connection or internet connection. Dont update the firmware. Dont download anything from Apple website. Yes, you can upload your songs in you iphone through itunes. Click on the library name and just press sync. I have additional phone if anyone is intrested? The price for 8GB phone is Rs. 23000/- it is box pack, but I am using it. Very good condition. Jai

I got an iPhone 4 gigs from US that has got Quad Band Technology i.e. GSM 1800. I have checked with Airtel they works in GSM 1800. Will my phone be usefull in India looking under these cercumstainces?

Don’t buy it cuz you’re void from tech support from Apple if your iPhone screws up. Apple also has a unique identifier that locks your iPhone during every F/W or S/W upgrade.

I’m an Apple Maniac myself and trust me, I’m waitin for Apple to come up with Version 2 of the iPhone and for the official release in India! As you all know, Version 2 must be more stable and consistent! lol

It very hard in Indian market to launch a locked GSM phone. Do you think this will hit the Indian Market? The People who are using vodafone or Airtel from last few years they will change there number for a new model phone. John R: Mr John u can download iworld and use the setting according to country and can use iphone anywhere in the world.

Rex and Vishal: To connect iphone to pc use the data cable that u use to cahrge the phone. and download itune and in itune u can load songs, video(only MP4) and photos of ur choice. then sync the iphone and enjoy it. dont worry i will not have any kind of problem to ur phone just avoid to update on ur own.

Amit: To use GPRS on iphone just open setting and then network and then edge and write on APN : airtelgprs.com and then shutdown and restart the iphone. and still if its not working then u can only use BSNL’s cellone gprs or mtnl’s gprs. rest u need to contact airtel team and im sure they dont know anything.

4 more days to go. Everyone of us are anxiously awaiting the launch of iPhone. Could we import iPhone from US and make it work here?

So far I was hearing that 3G iPhone is cheaper and may cost about Rs 10,000 to 12,000. Today, the local News channel mentioned that 3G iPhone is expected to cost almost 30,000. :( This is not fare, as it does not match with its USD price! Did anyone come across the final pricing of iPhone for 22-Aug launch?

Apple has a policy of launching their product for high cost at the start and they drop the prices later…so i think everyone should wait and watch ..its surly not worth for 36100 bux.

Vodafone - iphone 3G arriveson Aug 22. 8GB model is for Rs. 31,000 and 16 GB for Rs. 36,100. Avail on selected Vodafopne stores & to confirm booking u hav to pay Rs. 10,000 on Aug 20 or 21.

I think this is outrageous and ridiculous pricing by Apple/Vodafone. I am not going to buy the iPhone for Rs. 31000. It simply does not make sense.

When I compare US price vs India,

US: $300 (RS 13,500)
India: RS 31,000/-

So the cost differnce is more than double! Quite dissapointing :-(

So, can someone tell me which would be better, buying it in US or in India? and why?
Of cource, for the huge money difference I would prefer to get it from US (I have contacts there), but what could be the possible harm then? Please guid me before I go wrong…

The Reason for difference in cost in US & India is that the iphone in US is sold under subsidarized cost and they will compensate that money from call charges(the call charge in US is 25cents while in India 1.5 - 2 cents only) and you can also see that there is a compulsary 2 year contract from AT&T. But this is not possible in India so they sell at a higher price.

now i am useing BSNL sim card, but i want to buy iPhone From VOdafone. Is it possible That I use same BSNL sim card In Iphone Which purchased from Vodafone?

It would not be possible to use iPhone with other SIMs other than the operator you buy it from. For Ex. if you get your iPhone from vodafone it would only work with an Activated vodafone SIM. similarly for AirTel.

We gotta wait and see whether some desi geek comes out with a way to crack the iPhone..

This is for everyone contemplating buying an iPhone 3G:

Firstly unless you specifically are looking for an officially unlocked iPhone (These are available in the UK, France and a few other countries), all iPhones that are currently locked to the carrier/ telecom company selling them. Simply put when you buy and iphone from THEM, the minute you pull out THEIR SIM and put any other SIM, your brand new phone will lockdown.
Now scary as this seems, it actually isn’t as bad as it sounds.

There are 2 ways as of now to unlock (use any SIM) the new 3G iPhones:
Firstly a hardware unlock: a sticker of sorts is applied to your SIM card and what this does is “fool” the iphone into thinking that it is using either an AT&T SIM or a O2 SIM etc.
The other solution is basically a software unlock: Your iPhone’s operating system is hacked and the lock is disabled, allowing you to use any SIM card. The only software allowing you to do this at the moment is Pwnage Tool made by a group of hackers called the iPhone DEV Team( for more info just google pwnage or iphone dev)

Now for all those of you considering buying the phone from the US, well unfortuntely the only way you’re gonna be able to buy the phone officially is through AT&T where you WILL have to sign up for a 2 year contract (there is always of course Ebay for unofficially buying the phone)

Now matter where you buy your phone, these are the only 2 solutions available at the moment for using the phone without having to purchase the phones from airtel or vodafone and using them on other networks.

Customer in India pays $200.00 more than US customer over the period of 2 years. Plus Indian customer will lack 3G,unlimited data plan and more localized application. These can attributed to lack of data usage and low volume of customers. Cost may come down in India if more people use data plans this again takes couple of years.

my present problem is when i try to use Appstore and try to download some free application its asking for some account and password after much time consuming work,
i created an apple id and password but there another problem starts i cant sign into itunes my system has a network connection which the itunes refuses to discover and the itunes in the iphone says no support for your country!!

You have to create itunes account for India.

Simple way is open your itunes in your computer.click on STORE at the top menu. In that dropdown select SIGN FOR NEW ACCOUNT and fill up all the information.(It will ask for credit card details. you have to enter correct credit card details……don’t worry … nothing will be charged) . Make sure that you selected country as INDIA.once you completed then your itunes account will be successfully created….
Now in that STORE tab click on SEARCH button and you can download bunch of Free applications whiahc are available thru Appstore.

Once those applications are downloaded in your itunes .. now connect your iphone with your system and sync all those applications with your iphone….Done..applications are installed in your iphone.

Same email ID and password which you used to create apple account can be used thru iphone appstore to directly download free appliactions to iphone.

I want a iPhone very badly. Since prices in US are way cheap, I want to import it from there. My doubt is if I do so and update my firmware or software then there are known issues about iPhone getting locked.
So when I buy unlocked version from US do they provide me some means to re-unlock it or will I have to live with dead iPhone.

The prices of the iphone 3G unlocked in USA is not cheap, It costs anywhere from 500- 1000$ which is roughly 25000 to 50000Rs. Many people in the USA are selling second hand because, they cannot use most features. It is expensive to have it running every month. It costs 199$ for the locked phone plus 120-140$/month with a min 2years agreement to have the network from ATT. The only advantage is that people will have internet data connection 24/7. Every other phone nowadays has the internet feature. Nokia and HTC have better phones, people are moving to HTC a lot. Worst part is you have to install an iphone software on your computer to upload and download anything to the iphone. Even songs, contact info etc. It takes up a lot or memory and uses up the usb port of ur computer. So if you plug any other device on your usb, it doesnt work. I think HTC is the way to go.
