Just day before the launch of an unofficial Sholay remake ‘Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag’, the original maker of Sholay have signed a deal with Pritish Nandy Communications to remake the biggest Indian movie ever.
Sholay Media and Entertainment, owned by Sippy family, the holder of official franchisee has given the rights to Pritish Nandy for $100 million, a sum unheard in Indian film industry. Normally most of the films made are less than 10% of the above sum.
Pritish Nandy Communications would remake the movie, along with a prequel and sequel to the movie and also an animated version of the movie, and the deal would cover all the four projects.
The deal has been made possible only because of entry of corporate houses into Bollywood as earlier such amount were unheard in the industry.
Pritish Nandy would probably share revenues from the movie rather than giving license fees.
One can hope to see the official remake by next year along with the animated version. And this time iconic characters like Gabbar Singh, Basanti, Jai-Viru would be bearing the same name as the original move had.
In future, Pritish Nandy may also use the deal to launch video games and merchandise related to the movie.
