Am not too sure if that X-ray machine at the Airport security checkpoint can damage the components of a laptop but if you are curious to know how your laptop might appear to the security guy inside, here are some real pictures.
Laptop under the X-ray machine

The images was captured by Nick Veasey who uses X-Rays to capture the inner photographs of everyday objects like a city bus, an iPod, his shoes, the remote of a TV and even a full-size Boeing 777 jet.
You can downloads Nick’s collection as a PDF file or head over to Telegraph for his more recent work. Hat tip Ilya Vedrashko.

I am training security inspectors of those screening systems being used in airports.
I can guarantee that x-rays being used in those systems don’t harm in any way electronic devices.
Neither do they harm food nor camera film. It’s all a legend.
More than that – I’ve screened my laptop, iPhone, TISSOT watch and many other devices dozens of times and they are still fully functional and not damaged.
And for your safety – it DOES harm human body (and hands, as being screened in the first picture) and expands the probability of cancer. Don’t try this at home! ;)

BTW – The first picture is only partly real:
In real life you don’t see the letters and numbers on the keys and you don’t see them like that. More than that – many parts inside the laptop are missing.

I highly doubt that top picture is an actual Xray image. It is most likely a composite. There wouldn’t be an image with some of the keys visible and some not.

You must consider that this shots are made from many layers of x-ray shots, while in airport security the system is not the same.
