Sony Reader or Amazon Kindle - What Would You Pick

kindle sony readerWalt Mossberg was not very pleased with the hardware design of Amazon Kindle e-book reader though he did prefer it over Sony Reader for ease of downloading books.

But when fans asked Walt to pick just one of the two ebook readers, his choice was surprisingly Amazon Kindle (that costs $100 more than Sony Reader).

Considering that Walt’s review in WSJ can make or break products, this will be a big win for Amazon Kindle that also received quite a favorable review from David Pogue of New York Times.

Mossberg: I would choose the Kindle, despite its design problems. The Sony is slimmer, sturdier, and, unlike the Kindle, it isn’t prone to accidental button-pushing. But Amazon’s device can download books directly, without the need for a PC. Sony’s can’t. And Kindle’s online catalog of compatible titles is 90,000 books, more than triple the number Sony offers.

Humm, you forgot to ask about the Bookeen Cybook Gen3.

I have one of those, and it’s great !

I fail to grasp the urge for spontaneous book purchase…

I agree with both the comments. Firstly, it’s as if there are no other e-book readers available. Cybook Gen, as pointed by Ritchie and iLiad are also equally, and in certain areas, even better than the two (over?) publicised ones.

Secondly, why should anyone pay Amazon to download the ebooks they already have? Sounds ridiculous. Also, how can Amazon and Sony assume that everyone will require the same titles they have? Shouldn’t they have built their respective libraries first before selling their over-priced products? Personally, I will wait and watch, cause I think the market is going to have better options soon - even if they are better versions of existing models. Plus, they are not even compatible with all formats.
