I know backlinks is very important, I am submitting my blog to as many directories as possible as well as getting sites in similar field to link swap with me, my question..

When i submit to directories etc, shall i link to

    1. http://mydomain.com (I have a custom domain btw) OR
    2. http://www.mydomain.com OR
    3. www.mydomain.com

Which method is best for dot com domain so i can build the correct back link portfolio.

    Thanks

For Google and other search engines http://labnol.org is different from http://www.labnol.org

You must do the following things to make sure that all Google juice flows to one of the above URLs and is not distributed:

    1. Go to Google Webmaster dashboard and set a preferences for www or non-www URL.

    2. You can either edit .htaccess file on your web server to do a 301 redirect or ask the support team of your web hosting company to do that for you.

I am on Dreamhost and they have a setting the control panel so it is done automatically for me.

    Thanks Amit

My blog is hosted on blogger (I have just purchased a custom domain) so I take it I need to go to webmasters tools in Google then..

I made a mistake, when i began my blog 2 months ago, I started submitting http://mydomain.com to the directories, then I read some articles regarding backlinks and started telling people and directories to link to http://www.mydomain.com

So if I now make this change in Google webmasters tool and point it to www, does that mean I have wasted all of my previous http:// links ?

    Also is http://www.domain.com same as www.mydomain.com ?

If I pick www - which one should i be using ?

    Thanks

I have now changed the setting in Google Webmaster Tool to www

So what will happen when google updates that setting, and people try coming to my website on http://domain.com - I am hosting on Blogger so I cant do the beneath

"2. You can either edit .htaccess file on your web server to do a 301 redirect or ask the support team of your web hosting company to do that for you."

so now I just have one silly question

when I submit my website to directories and advise others to link to me, shall i them to links back to

    a) www.mydomain.com or
    b) http://www.mydomain.com

or doesn't it matter as both have www?

    luk4m,

Just make sure that your pointer links use the same format as suggested in Google webmasters central.

One point to note though. Don't worry about directory submissions they are not going to benefit you unless it's DMOZ or BOTW.

Also since my website is hosted at Blogger with a custom domain, i have noticed this option..

    Redirect mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com

    it is currently unticked

is this correct now that I have changed the setting in google webmaster to point to www ?

Also Amit pls get back to me regarding the question above, about me not being able to carry out step 2 from your instructions

When you have too many outgoing links on a page, the value gets distributed.
