I am puzzled by something that's happened recently.

After viewing certain YouTube sites just a handful
    of times, they mysteriously disappear!

For example, the nearly-50-year old opening title to
the original "13 Ghosts". Or a 10-year-old episode
    of "Charmed".

Which should have made back the money for the copyright
holders...and could be "fair use". And which must have
    been posted for some time!

I therefore can't understand why this is happening. I
look at stuff from a borrowed computer and it's for
    educational use only.

Do you get a message stating that the video(s) in question have been pulled for violating the ToS ? That's usually a good indication that "fair use" doesn't apply. :-)

It is possible that someone has uploaded copyright content onto YouTube - it remains available for sometime but then is removed after the owners send Google a DMCA complaint.
