My Outlook 2007 (on vista) is very slow opening messages. I have read the suggestions on the speeding it up but the only thing that works is the safe mode. I can't figure out the difference in settings between normal and safe modes. Can someone point to a link explaining the safe mode, or perhaps how to fix the darn outlook?

Make sure you work offline and disable images from the settings.

There are a few posts that I read elsewhere with people having a similar problem to yours. Most of those had a very visible improvement when they turned *off* Email Scanning from within their Symantec Product (a la Norton AV / Norton IS / 360 etc.)
If you don't have any Symantec product and it's slow, also consider turning off the attachment preview pane.
Check and turn off un-needed add-ins especially OutlookAddin from CyberLink (it's known to cause problems on some PCs. In order to do this, follow these instructions:
Make sure Outlook is closed.Click the Start button; open Computer and go: C\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Outlook .exe and then right click on Outlook.exe and click "run as administrator". When Outlook opens go to trust center and uncheck the Outlookaddin box. You will not be allowed to uncheck addins when Outlook is opened in the normal fashion.
There are also a number of updates that have been released. Link
See if that helps. Also, remember to reboot your PC after making changes to the add-ins settings and ensure that you don't have too large a PST / OST file.

UPDATE: Is your machine a DELL Laptop? In that case, the known culprit is DELL Media Direct. Uninstall it and you ought to be good to go.

I mistankenly put this post in PDF section. Sorry about that.
My 1st post here and I hope someone can help me. I got to this webpage http://labnol.blogspot.com/2007/03/microsoft-outlook-2007-running-slow-fix.html
It gave great tips on how to fix Outlook 2007 going sooo slooow. In any case I did all the changes except break link from my Trendmicro AV. I am concerned if i do that I will open myself up to viruses or am I missing something?
Also any other tips would be most welcome on how to correct this nightmare called Outlook 2007. Thanks

@Migo: In order to test whether Trend Micro is the culprit and at the same time, not risk anything, unplug your connection to the internet - I mean physically remove the cable if you use a modem / LAN Card etc. If you use Wi-Fi, disable the connection before trying anything out. Essentially go offline as physically as you can!
OK - try archiving your older messages into a separate .PST file, that's one way of slimming things down.
A smaller PST file is better
KB 291645 explains how you can compact your PST file thus speeding things up.
PLease write back describing your Outlook contents - like how many folders / contacts / email folders etc. exist and how you actually use it. Also, if there are any specific problems, please share details including current version, OS version and of course whether Office Service Pack is present.

If I disable the Symantec email scan, won't my Outlook be very vulnerable to viruses?

I don't think you'll be any more vulnerable than you already are, at least with file attachments - as soon as a new file is created, your antivirus - NAV in this case (with the defaults), scans the file.
What might hit you is a zero-day exploit which might use some hole to cause damage. Most security experts therefore caution against the use of the preview pane. One way to get around that is of course to ensure that ALL messages are displayed in plain text. If there's any doubt about a message, don't open it in your client. Instead head to your webmail and open it in your browser to see whether the message is suspect. If, at any time, you suspect *anything* set that email aside - pick up the phone and call the sender to verify that the email was indeed sent by them. If a call isn't feasible, send a fresh email....
If you can't be bothered to do all this and the email doesn't appear critical - just delete it. :-)
