I am trying to integrate BBpress into my wordpress blog. As per instructions, BBPress uses the same database as the blog. That scares me. Is it really safe to go ahead?

Make a backup of your database prior to installing bbPress - that way you can always revert back without any fear of losing content/settings.
That being said, if you read the FAQ and follow instructions, you shouldn't have problems. As an additional layer of defense, mirror your blog / database on another host and try installing bbPress there, if you want a run-through of the steps involved or if you just want to try some stuff out.
