Upload images where? If you're talking about editing posts or comments, the default WordPress editor is quite capable of doing exactly what you seem to want.
Of course, I'm assuming you've upgraded to WP 2.7.1 (the latest stable version) at this time.

You may use either an FTP editor (like FTPzilla) or a blog editor (like Windows Live Writer) to upload images from the computer to your WordPress folder.
Windows Live Writer includes image preview as well as image editing features like crop, resize, border effects, etc.

The default image uploder would work better. But it will not function unless you have activated it. To activate it follow the steps.
Login in to your worpress account as admin.
Go to Settings.
Then Go to Miscellaneous.
Under "Uploading" tab in "Store uploads in this folder" field enter the default value i.e "wp-content/uploads" Save the changes. Now your WP Image uploader will function perfectly.
