Your wordpress should be hosted...and not the username@wordpress.com
Hope you need to upgrade the service to implement adsense there. --- I am not sure about the upgrading thing. Hope its available inside your wordpress.com account, with the tab name Upgrade.

The current version of WordPress.com doesn't allow Google Ads or for that matter any advertising.
WordPress is expected to release a pro-version that will cost money but will allow bloggers to include Google AdSense in their blog templates.

There are a number of plugins for WordPress that help you with AdSense.
Take a look here.
AdSense Manager also has support for alternate publishing networks like AdBrite, AdGridWork, Adpinion, Adroll, Commission Junction, CrispAds, ShoppingAds, Yahoo!PN and WidgetBucks in addition, of course, to Google AdSense.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, your WordPress blog needs to be hosted on your own server / not on wordpress.com !
