First make sure your Wi-Fi router is broadcasting its SSID. Also make sure in the security settings of the router, there isn't any sort of MAC filtering, thereby allowing only devices with certain MAC addresses to connect.
After you make sure of these two points, it should be a simple matter of connecting your phone.
Also check with your manual/phone settings and the Wifi Router settings the type of Wireless security in place - WEP (which is weak and not recommended) or WPA2 (which is stronger, newer and what you ought to be running). Also remember to configure your DNS servers correctly.
@Dearsir: You've asked for a step by step guide. How are we supossed to do that (even if some kind soul has the inclination/time to do so) when you haven't given us any details of your connection, type of wifi router etc.?

@Sparx, Although WPA2 is stronger than WEP, but Nokia phones cannot be connected easily with the most secure network. Most of the phones easily connects to WPA which requires 10 digit security key.
May be most secure network(WPA2, WEP2) causes interruption while bridging the connection.Posted 11 months ago # -
@Mohitsmith: In that case, you(the user/OP) have to decide on whether the usability factor or the security of your network is more important.
