i just wanted to provide a direct link to add a firefox search engine for another site (download.com) on my webpage. though i know that the plugin can be easily be added from mycroft. how can i create a link for my users to add from my site so that they don't need to go to mycroft and it just adds from there.

Once you create the reqd. XML file, host it and make sure your server serves with the correct MIME type - "application/opensearchdescription+xml".
It's far, far easier to create and host it on Mycroft.

Thanks Sparx. Do we have to host the file ourselves? Is there no way we can just provide a link to a hosted file on Mycroft?

Not really, because if you have a look at the code, it calls a javascript function to serve you the appropriate code. I think it's easier to merely post a link to the page that will list your particular search engine. If you create a custom search engine, then you can add a custom term - I added the term labnol for DI Search. So, this link takes you only to that link. All a user has to do is click on it.
