Freeware application for merging partitions

(3 posts)
  1. Hello,
I have a number of unwanted partitions on my laptop running Windows XP and these are taking up a lot of space. Can anyone suggest a freeware application which allows a user to merge partitions.

    Thanks in advance.

    From EE:

First of all, Backup your system, in case you need it, if not....

Second : boot with your Windows XP Cd-rom and, when prompted to Recover an old installation or new one, choose "new one" by pressing the ESC key.

Next step, choose of partition. Here, select the C: and Press "D", Then "ENTER", then"L", and your partition C has gone; then select the F: and Press "D", Then "ENTER", then"L", and your partition F has gone. In the partitions table nothing left but "Unallocated Space". Choose it and press "Enter", set the size of it, in your case, Full Space and press "Enter".

Then Setup will copy files and install as usual.

  3. If you are going to remove/merge the extended partition that contains multiple drives then you better use your disk management tool in Windows XP. Just backup everything in the drives you want to merge or resize then go to your control panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management and then remove your drives using disk management and then re-create new partitions with the size you want. Do it at your own risk.
