If you're planning on having the .com as your primary site name, then I suggest you get the .net, .org too just to prevent cybersquatters from getting it. Most domain registrars give a discount if you register multiple domains at the same time.

Also, my logic was to give a certain indian-ness to your site, so a .com / .net redirecting to a .in site makes more sense than vice versa, because most people wil more likely try to enter .com rather than any other TLD.

Thanks Sparx!

I will buy both the .com and the .in and just have the .in address redirect to the .com address.

Much appreciated :)

No that's not entirely true.

It doesn't matter (to SERPs) what your TLD is as long as it is relevant to your users/viewers.

Since you are planning to have india-centric content on your site, I sincerely believe a .in domain is as good (in technical terms) as a .com domain.

You're also more likely to get a domain name of choice with .in rather than .com although YMMV. Now, having a sub-domain - .co.in *might* hamper your viewers' perception of your site as it resides one level lower than the TLD.

Ideally find yourself a domain name that's available on all major international TLDs - .com, .net, .org and also .in. That'll help divert visitors who might enter your domain with an incorrectly assumed extension.

Example - thinking indianews.com instead of indianews.in etc.

Can someone explain the logic behind registering a site with TLD as .com vs .co.in vs .in?

For example, if I want to start a news blog on India, would it make more sense for me to register the TLD as .co.in or .in as opposed to .com?

what are the pros/cons of each TLD? can someone pls post some info regarding this?

Thank You,
