1. Windows XP is a 32-bit OS, so it won't support more than 2GB of effective RAM. You can always use a RAMDisk extender to use the remaining RAM, but I think it's way way better to either shift to a Linux distro or Win 7 64-bit that can indeed make use of the full amount of RAM.

At first glance, the DELL Inspiron 1545 listed here would satisfy almost ALL your requirements. As an added bonus, it also comes bundled with Win 7 64-bit.

Also, take a look at these notebooks from HCL.

An additional suggestion - most laptops have a video out port, so you can plug in your laptop to an external monitor that would be large sized and suited to your needs - I'm thinking 21" and above. So, you may even look at laptops with smaller screens and purchase as additional super-sized monitor that you can hook up to the laptop.

If you intend to purchase the laptop from a particular store, I suggest you talk to the store reps there about items in their stock and availability because usually laptops available online as part of promotions or holiday deals MAY NOT be available in stores.

Windows Activation uses some internal hardware IDs to uniquely identify a computer (I think each hard-drive is assigned a number by the manufacturer)

If you upgrade hardware or install some new peripheral device, it should not ask for reactivation as long as the hard-drive is the same (am not sure about motherboard)

If in future you have to install Windows to a new machine, make sure your old machine is connected to the internet so that your Windows license becomes free (available) on Microsoft servers to be used on other computers.

For (4) - i suggest getting the autopatcher pack from some PC World or PC Magazine CD. It's amazing though Microsoft pulled it down.

Or Windows XP SP3 is now under beta testing. So if you can wait, it will be a roll up of all hotfixes, patches released by MSFT since XP SP2.

Amit,

I have a licensed copy of Windows XP SP1.

1) So, is there any issues like "you can activate n no. of times" ?

2) is there any h/w issue i.e. "if there is n no. of changes in h/w devices it won't activate" or once a product is activated will it ask for reactivation if there are n no. of h/w changes?

3) I am asking this because suppose in future if I have to install windows on a new machine, will I face any problem?

4) Like I said before, I have SP1 CD, but with automatic update downloads, my system is updated with SP2. So, If I reinstall windows on a different machine, how can I install those updates too without downloading again from Microsoft site?
