Re-installing the OS removes the viruses from the System Drive only.

Most of the recent virus create autorun.inf in your drives, and the moment your drive is opened, the virus is again started.

So after your reinstall, if you open a drive by double-click, it will install the virus again.

If you want to remove the traces, enable Show Hidden Files, Show Protected Operating System files AFTER REINSTALLING, type the drive letter in the address bar, for example D:

Then remove the autorun.inf and the associated executable file (see for open= inside autorun.inf).

This is the best way to clean such viruses.
If you don't care about your data, you may do a full disk format. This will remove every virus infection.

Merely re-installing the OS will not clean the infection if the infected files reside within the same folder OR if they're in a separate folder on a separate partition.

You need to run a FULL and thorough system scan *and* scan within compressed files.

Perform a clean install of your OS *after* eliminating all traces of infected files.

You still have this problem after a clean install?

Hard to believe, but now that the format has already occurred, you've already started off on a clean slate.

Any particular error messages after the format?

3. important.exe

they were cleaned using nod32 anti virus

however after they were removed none of the applications seem to work

i tried installing acrobat reader

and it would show rundll32.exe not found

also when i try to run any system tools

it still shows that message

even when i open c:

it shows the same

what shall i do to remove this problem

Hi Amit

Finally I managed to remove the virus. I wasn't able to delete it because regedit and task manager were blocked, and the Folder Options menu wasn't available to unhide the folder. I used System Restore to reset the system to a previous date's setting. This allowed me to unhide the folder and delete it in the safe mode.

Thanks for your help.

How do you plan to remove heap41a virus?

Google tells me that it resides in your C: drive under the heap41a folder. Maybe start you computer in safe mode in safe mode and delete that folder or use any of these online virus scanners.

Your IP Address says that you are from Unites States where YouTube in not blocked.

Are you accessing YouTube from your office ? It's possible that your employer has some internet filtering software that's blocking access to YouTube.

Try a site like splashcastmedia.com or truveo.com to check if you can watch youtube video there.

get a firewall like the Zonealarm free version. see what programs are connecting to the internet.

else you may download process explorer from sysinternals website and see what processes are running .. if you smell some bad behaviour, kill the process.

the last option is to start windows in safe mode.
