its normally difficult to decide. one normally starts on a free service like blogger as most are unsure whether the blog will click or not. and after it starts getting good traffic, one wants to shift to a hosted blog. but by that time there is so much to lose in terms of traffic, google ranking etc that the step becomes difficult. i feel that if one is sure that one will blog regularly, one should start a hosted blog and take an annual plan of a cheap host and it should not cost more than usd 70-80 for the year. consider it an investment and blog with cool mind. once the blog is successful, the plan can be easily upgraded.

It would be difficult to spell an exact moment. But, I suggest that if you're making good hits, you make the switch ASAP. Otherwise, all your good content will continue to remain pointed at the WordPress.com blog.

If you switch now, you can monetize your blog.

Google indexes blogs rather properly, as far as I am aware

I am running a blog at http://digitizor.wordpress.com, and off late have been getting good hits. But the fear of losing hits on switching from custom domain is keeping me back. My queries are:

1) once i switch to my own domain, will the google page indexing be as effective as it used to be while my blog was on wordpress?

2) when should you ideally switch to the custom domain blog (running wordpress.org software). I wanted to know this in terms of hits

thank you

HI Amit,

I have finally moved from blogspot to custom blog (this one also hosted by blogger) as discussed in http://www.labnol.org/forums/topic/blogger-to-custom-domain.

I have some problems with RSS redirection though:

1) I am using feedburner for both OLD_BLOG and NEW_BLOG. For my NEW_BLOG I went to "Edit Feed Details…" > "original feed" and changed it to my OLD_FEED. Now here what is happening is that in my NEW_FEED I can see the old content which is published on OLD_BLOG but not the new content of NEW_BLOG. How can I resolve this?

2) From now onwards I don't want the new content from my OLD_BLOG to show up in my NEW_FEED. By new content in OLD_BLOG I mean the excerpts and link to the content posted on NEW_BLOG. Well, I want it exactly the way you have done here [http://www.labnol.org/internet/blogging/moving-blog-from-blogger-to-wordpress-with-rss-feeds/1870/] in step 9. but what I see as of new is that NEW_FEED has the new content of OLD_BLOG also.

Could you please tell where am I going wrong?

By the way Amit, the way you have "shifted from blogger to wordpress" was an excellent one. I am also trying to follow similar steps only diff being I am not moving from blogspot to wordpress but from blogspot to custom domain(hosted with blogger only).
